Hagelin, Crosby keep Penguins on home roll

-

Carl Hagelin scored the go-ahead goal with 4:15 remaining to finish another Pittsburgh third-period rally, as the Penguins beat the Carolina Hurricanes 3-2 on Wednesday night.

Chris Kunitz scored the tying goal early in the third against goalie Cam Ward, while Penguins goalie Marc-Andre Fleury stopped all 19 shots he faced after replacing an apparently ill Matt Murray (25 saves) at the start of the period.

There were no penalties called -- the first such game in the NHL this season.

The Hurricanes took a 1-0 lead in the first period on Elias Lindholm’s third goal of the season.

After Sidney Crosby scored only 26 seconds into the second period, the Hurricanes seized the momentum back later in the period when Lee Stempniak swatted in a rebound for his seventh goal before Kunitz and Hagelin sealed it.

Crosby’s tally was his league-leading 26th in his 31st game and moved him into a tie with Edmonton’s Connor McDavid for the NHL scoring lead at 42 points. Crosby, who missed six games with a concussion at the start of the season, trailed McDavid by nine points when he made his first start on October 25.

The Penguins (24-8-5) have won three straight and four of five. They have points in 10 consecutive home games and are 11-1-2 in December.

Elsewhere, Mitchell Marner scored the only shootout goal while rookie Auston Matthews produced a goal and an assist in regulation to lead the Toronto Maple Leafs to a 3-2 win over the Florida Panthers.

Matthews, 19, was the first overall pick in the 2016 draft has 17 goals and 11 assists this season.

Meanwhile, Henrik Sedin scored early in the second period as the Vancouver Canucks defeated the Los Angeles Kings 2-1.

Loui Eriksson also scored for the Canucks, who snapped a twogame losing streak, while Tanner Pearson scored for the Kings.

Also, the Tampa Bay Lightning rallied from two goals down in the final 10 minutes, then won 1:26 into overtime on Tyler Johnson’s second goal to beat the Montreal Canadiens 4-3.

The Lightning forced OT when Victor Hedman and Ondrej Palat scored in the final 10 minutes of regulation.

In St. Louis, David Perron and Scottie Upshall scored 1:20 apart in the third period and Robby Fabbri recorded his first hat trick of his career to carry the Blues to a 6-3 victory over the Philadelphia Flyers.
