Inroads toward gender equality

- • By ARIEL SHAPIRA

The MindCET innovation incubator announced that 15 start-up finalists from around the world have made it to the final round to compete for a place at the Global EdTech Startups Awards (GESA) 2016. The competition began with 600 contestants.

The final event will take place in London on January 24, and all the start-ups that won competitions at GESA events held in recent months in Tel Aviv, Boston, Mexico City, Paris and California will compete for first place. The Israeli delegation will be represented by Sentidio, a start-up that helps children with autism learn social skills in fun and engaging ways.

The start-up that wins the final competition in London will receive a $10,000 cash prize and direct access to start-up accelerators in the US, UK, Spain, India and Colombia.

“The field of educational start-ups has turned into a global social movement that is helping to close the gap and make great changes in education,” MindCET director Avi Warshavsky said. “The GESA competition is the world’s largest education tournament and will hopefully serve as a catalyst for other important achievements in education.”

Center for gender equality

The Science, Technology and Space Ministry made a great step toward achieving gender equality when it recently established the first national center that will provide the public with accessible data on gender studies and gender equality, at an investment of NIS 3 million.

Among the center’s operations will be data collection, processing of studies and making all information accessible to researchers and the public in a user-friendly way.

The center, a joint project of the Van Leer Institute, the Samuel Neaman Institute for National Policy Research and the Public Knowledge Workshop (Hasadna), will coordinate between government agencies, universities and research institutes and utilize advanced digital platforms so that data can be easily analyzed.
