No injuries to IDF soldiers, who shot suspect near Tulkarm

Palestinia­ns take part in a protest yesterday following the funeral of Palestinia­n teenager Qusay Hasna al-Umour, who was shot dead by border policemen during clashes on Monday in the West Bank. On Tuesday, Tulkarm resident Nidal Daoud Mahdawi was shot dead while attempting to stab an IDF soldier.

A knife-wielding Palestinia­n was shot and killed Tuesday evening following an attempted stabbing attack on IDF soldiers at a checkpoint outside the West Bank city of Tulkarm.

According to an IDF statement, “an assailant armed with a knife attempted to stab an IDF soldier at a crossing adjacent to Tulkarm. Responding to the imminent threat, forces fired towards the attacker, resulting in his death.”

No soldiers were injured during the attempted attack.

Palestinia­n media identified the assailant as 44-year-old Tulkarm resident Nidal Daoud Mahdawi, who held Israeli residency status.

Earlier in the day, police cleared for publicatio­n that Border Police officers prevented a stabbing attack in Jerusalem on Monday. According to the police, a 19-year-old Palestinia­n was detained as he was riding a bus in the east Jerusalem neighborho­od of a-Tur. The man admitted to police that he had intended to go to Damascus Gate in the Old City of Jerusalem, where he planned to buy a knife and stab police or security forces in the area.

The investigat­ion is ongoing, and the Palestinia­n was remanded and will be held in detention until he appears in court.

Also on Monday, a 17-year-old Palestinia­n was killed during clashes with Border Police in the West Bank village of Tukua near Bethlehem. According to the Palestinia­n Red Crescent, Qusay Hasna al-Umour was shot in the chest three times. The IDF stated that “Due to the extent of the violence, Border Police fired .22-caliber rounds towards a main violent instigator, resulting in his death.”
