The Center for World University Rankings, initiated in Saudi Arabia and headquartered in the United Arab Emirates, has ranked Haifa’s Technion-Israel Institute of Technology first in the world in the field of aerospace engineering.

The inaugural subject rankings, released Monday, feature the top global universities in 227 subjects covering all academic disciplines in the sciences and social sciences.

The Technion also achieved top-10 placements worldwide in the Computer Science – Theory and Methods category (No. 4) and the Computer Science – Information Systems category (No. 8).

Tel Aviv University also achieved top 10 placements in two subjects: Physics – Fluids and Plasmas (No. 6) and Computer Science – Theory and Methods (No. 7).

The Hebrew University of Jerusalem ranked fourth in the subject of Logic.

Globally, only 365 institutions – out of the more than 25,000 degree-granting institutions in the world – achieved at least one top 10 ranking, led by Harvard University with 112 top-10 placements, including 72 first-place rankings.

In total, 36 countries are represented: the US accounts for 45% of the top-10 institutions, followed by China (13%), United Kingdom (10%), Canada (5%) and the Netherlands (4%).

Australia (3%), Japan (2%), Singapore (2%), France (2%) and Germany (1%) were next with the highest number of placements among the top-10.

President of the Center for World University Rankings Dr. Nadim Mahassen said of the Israeli rankings that, “While Israeli universities achieved positive results, they should invest more in research if they aspire to be more competitive globally.”

The 2017 subject rankings are based on the number of research articles in top-tier journals.

The CWUR also releases an annual ranking of the top universities in the world. It is the only global university ranking that measures the quality of education and training of students as well as the prestige of the faculty members and the quality of their research without relying on surveys and university data submissions.

In the 2016 university rankings, the Hebrew University placed No. 26 in the world and among the top five universities in Asia.

The Weizmann Institute of Science and the Tel Aviv University were also ranked in the top-100 at No. 41 and No. 81, respectively.
