The opening film of the 34th Jerusalem Film Festival, which will run from July 13-23, will be Michel Hazanavicius’ Redoubtable. Hazanavicius, whose 2011 film, The Artist, won five Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Director, will attend the festive opening-night ceremony and screening at the Sultan’s Pool amphitheater.

There will be more than 180 films from all over the world at the festival, which be held at the Jerusalem Cinematheque. Some screenings will take place at the Lev Smadar theater, which is currently being renovated but will reopen in time for the festival, and Yes Planet.

Redoubtable is a fictionalized story based on the life of the iconoclastic French master director Jean-Luc Godard. It premiered at Cannes to great acclaim, and is about Godard’s love affair with the young actress Anne Wiazemsky, whom he first directed in La Chinoise and later married. The film is based on Wiazemsky’s autobiography.

The full list of films in the Jerusalem Film Festival will be released soon.

Films will be screened outdoors, for free, at different locations around the city, including the Mahane Yehuda market, Safra Square, the Old City, Zion Square and the Clal Building. There will also be interactive exhibits around the city which will focus on different genres and different areas of cinema.

The festival is planned and run by Elad Smorzik, the artistic director, and Noa Regev, the CEO of the Jerusalem Cinematheque and the festival director.

Ticket sales will start on June 30.
