- (Israel Opera) • By SHAWN RODGERS

Puccini’s ever-popular Madama Butterfly returns to the Israel Opera from July 15-28 in a production staged by innovative Japanese director Keita Asari and conducted by Daniel Oren.

Asari has directed several opera productions including Turandot for La Scala in Milan , Elektra for the Salzburg Festival and this production of Madama Butterfly for La Scala which was then presented also in the opera houses of Valencia, Tokyo, Florence and Santiago de Chili.

Based on a popular short story by John Luther Long, Madama Butterfly tells the story of a trusting and innocent young geisha, CioCio-San, who falls disastrously in love with Pinkerton, an American Navy lieutenant. Highlights include the melodic Humming Chorus, the moving aria One Fine Day and the unforgettable Love Duet.

The main soloists are Susanna Branchini, Xiuwei Sun and Ira Bertman as Cio-Cio-San and Najmiddin Mavlyanov and Matteo Lippi as Pinkerton.

The production will be performed by international and Israeli soloists, The Opera Orchestra – The Israel Symphony Orchestra Rishon LeZion and The Israeli Opera Chorus conducted by Ethan Schmeisser. Tickets range from NIS 190-470. For more info and tickets visit www.israel-opera. co.il.
