Pearls of wisdom

Prove your worth in the monthly pop culture quiz

- • By RUTH BELOFF

The birthstone for June is the pearl. Actually, June has two other birthstones as well – alexandrite and moonstone – but for the purposes of this quiz, we will focus on the pearl.

The ideal pearl is perfectly round and smooth, but many other shapes can occur. Natural (or wild) pearls are very rare. Cultured pearls are formed in pearl farms, using artificial as well as natural processes.

In jewelry, a pearl’s value is determined by its luster, color, size, symmetry and smoothness. The larger the pearl, the more valuable it is. The pearl is said to symbolize purity, generosity and integrity. Christians and Hindus adopted it as a symbol of purity. Hence the tradition of brides wearing pearls.

The theme of this quiz is “pearls” and “white.” Thus all the questions and/ or answers revolve around those concepts.
