Los Angeles Opera musical director to highlight summer workshop

- • By HELEN KAYE

The annual Israel Vocal Arts Opera Workshop takes place this year from July 9-28 in Stryker Hall at the Tel Aviv Conservatory of Music.

As usual, the program conceived and initiated in 1988 by Metropolitan Opera vocal coach Joan Dornemann, brings together young opera hopefuls from Israel and abroad in a program that comprises classes, individual coaching as well as master classes, concerts and opera, these latter three all open to the public.

This year’s operas are Mozart’s The Magic Flute (July 20 and 22), Massenet’s Cendrillon, or Cinderella (July 24 and 26), and Donizetti’s L’elisir d’amore, or The Elixir of Love (July 25 and 27). The final gala concert at which the students strut their stuff – always fun – will be at the Tel Aviv Museum on July 28.

This year, the guest of honor teacher is James Conlon, music director of the Los Angeles Opera, who has made it his life’s work to revels the lesser known works of contemporary composers who fell victim to the Nazis. His master classes (July 12 and 13) show how a conductor works with singers. Other teachers include Israel’s own Dan Ettinger (master class July 17), who started life as a singer and is now music director of the Israel Opera, and stage director Michael Shell, whose July 15 master class shows how he works with singers.
