The inauguration of the large glass roof that will change the face of the historic Paris district

C’era una volta il mercato ottocentesco di ferro battuto disegnato da Victor Baltard nel cuore di Parigi. Poi, negli anni Settanta del secolo scorso, la controversa demolizione per costruire qui il Forum des Halles, snodo di traffico sotterraneo e shopping centre tutto archi e vetri a specchio, che la città non ha mai digerito. Ora siamo alla terza fase: la Canopée (chioma), gigantesca copertura di vetro dalle linee morbide, pensata per riconciliare i parigini con Les Halles, sarà inaugurata in queste settimane. Costata un miliardo di euro e composta di 18mila scaglie di vetro sospese su una struttura d’acciaio, è stata concepita dall’architetto Patrick Berger come una porta d’ingresso alla città. Oltre al grande tetto ci sono un nuovo giardino, un conservatorio per musica e arti e un centro per l’hip-hop pensato per i giovani che convergono qui dalla banlieue. Then, in the 1970s, its controversial demolition to make room for the Forum des Halles, a subterranean traffic junction and shopping centre filled with arches and mirrored glass which the city was never able to digest. Now we have reached the third phase: the CanopŽe (“Forest Canopy”), a gigantic glass roof with soft lines intended to reconcile Parisians with Les Halles, will be inaugurated in the coming weeks. Costing a billion euros and composed of 18,000 scale-like pieces of glass suspended on a steel structure, it was conceived by the architect Patrick Berger as a gateway to the city. In addition to the great roof there are a new garden, a conservatory for music and the arts and a hip-hop cultural centre for young people coming here from the banlieue
