In the 1920s sa­na­to­riums be­gan to spring up all over the So­viet Union, heal­th re­sorts set up by the re­gi­me. To­day ma­ny of the­se pla­ces ha­ve fal­len in­to di­su­se, but others con­ti­nue to ope­ra­te and, along wi­th so­me de­ci­ded­ly unconventional treatments (su­ch as ba­ths in the black cru­de oil of Naf­ta­lan at a tem­pe­ra­tu­re of 38 de­grees, com­pres­ses of pa­raf­fin or cho­co­la­te and gym­na­stics in a salt mi­ne at a dep­th of 420 me­tres), of­fer the pos­si­bi­li­ty of ob­ser­ving from clo­se-up ma­ster­pie­ces of neo­clas­si­cal and con­struc­ti­vi­st ar­chi­tec­tu­re, ve­sti­ges of the So­viet era. Wi­th Ho­li­days in So­viet Sa­na­to­riums Ma­ryam Omi­di, mo­ving from Ar­me­nia to the Cri­mea, from Ukrai­ne to Ka­za­kh­stan, from Azer­bai­jan to Turk­me­ni­stan, tells us the sto­ries of about for­ty of the­se sa­na­to­riums. Omi­di’s tex­ts are ac­com­pa­nied by a beau­ti­ful pho­to­gra­phic re­por­ta­ge that al­ter­na­tes pic­tu­res of the buil­dings wi­th por­trai­ts of the peo­ple who use them to­day and the unu­sual treatments pro­vi­ded.
