Il 29 agosto apre a Venezia la Mostra Internazionale d’Arte Cinematografica. È un’edizione speciale, perché è la 75a e perché i riflettori si riaccendono su un Lido in via di recupero dopo decenni di declino, tra devastazioni del territorio, progetti mai realizzati e velleità di sviluppatori immobiliari improvvisati. Cuore di questo nuovo inizio è lo storico Hotel Des Bains temporaneamente riaperto per ospitare l’esposizione sulla storia della Mostra del Cinema curata da Alberto Barbera. Foto, filmati e documenti per lo più inediti raccontano l’epopea del festival del cinema più antico del mondo, nato nel 1932 come estensione della Biennale d’Arte. L’intento è portare la vita negli edifici storici per sostenere la rinascita del Lido. L’impresa è nelle mani di Coima, la società già protagonista del progetto Porta Nuova a Milano. Per ora sono iniziati i lavori all’Hotel Excelsior. Poi toccherà al Des Bains. Manfredi Catella, il finanziere a capo di Coima, ha in mente piani ben più ambiziosi e parla di un modello Milano. Ma basterà la vocazione turistico-ricreativa a salvare Venezia e il suo Lido? Silvia Botti
The Venice International Film Festival opens on 29th August. A special occasion this year, firstly because it is the 75th edition and secondly because the spotlight will be back on the Lido and its revival after decades of decline that has brought environmental devastation, unrealised projects and fed the ambitions of improvised property developers. At the heart of this new beginning is the historic Hotel Des Bains, temporarily reopened to host an exhibition on the history of the Film Festival curated by Alberto Barbera. Photos, film clips and documents will offer an account of the world’s oldest film festival. The intention is to breathe new life into the Lido’s historic buildings to support its rebirth. That task is in the hands of COIMA, the asset management company that also played a leading role in the Porta Nuova project in Milan. Work has started on the Hotel Excelsior, to be followed by Hotel Des Bains. Manfredi Catella, the financier who runs COIMA, has some even more ambitious plans and speaks of adopting a Milan model. But will its tourism and recreational vocation be enough to save Venice and its Lido?
