DALLA STRADA QUESTO INTERESSANTE EDIFICIO di Morlaix compare come una tipica architettura rurale bretone con finestre incorniciate da blocchi di granito, modanature di mattoni cotti smaltati e il tetto di ardesia tipico di queste latitudini. È dal cortile interno che si può intuire il valore innovativo del progetto di Catherine Rannou e Jérôme Guéneau. «Abbiamo voluto sottolineare il contrasto tra la facciata vernacolare e il potenziale eco-sostenibile di questo edificio lavorando soprattutto sul lato cortile, che è anche quello con la migliore esposizione solare, a sud», spiegano gli architetti. Tutto è partito dal rifacimento del tetto: le nuove capriate di legno sostengono una copertura tradizionale di lose d’ardesia, ora punteggiata di lastre di vetro che contribuiscono all’illuminazione della parte più interna dell’edificio, attraverso canons de lumière, specie di lucernari introversi, collocati e orientati strategicamente rispetto al tragitto del sole. FROM THE ROAD THIS INTERESTING BUILDING in Morlaix looks like a typical work of Breton rural architecture with windows framed by granite blocks, mouldings of glazed fired brick and slate roofing. It’s from the internal courtyard that you can sense the innovative nature of Catherine Rannou and Jérôme Guéneau’s design. As they explain: “We wanted to underline the contrast between the vernacular façade and the environmentally sustainable potential of this building by working chiefly on the courtyard side, which is also the one with the best exposure to the sun, as it faces south”. The work started with the rebuilding of the roof. New wooden trusses now support a traditional covering of slate tiles, and are interspersed with panes of glass that help to illuminate the innermost part of the building, through canons de lumière or light pipes, a sort of introverted skylight, located and oriented strategically with respect to the course of the sun. The internal façade is marked by a bioclimatic loggia-conservatory that illuminates the dining room (now painted blue) and that can be opened up

Al piano terreno, rialzato per non essere allagato dalle forti piene del Queffleut che scorre appena oltre la proprietà, si trovano il vestibolo e una lavanderia, illuminata da mobili di un giallo squillante. Gli adiacenti garage e deposito, lasciati al livello originale, sono chiusi da una porta di legno scorrevole che ricorda le origini agricole della struttura. A collegare i due piani dell’abitazione, una scala a chiocciola di legno, con i gradini di frassino “appesi” al soffitto grazie a montanti di metallo e legno. Nella scelta dei materiali naturali si è tenuto conto della vicinanza dei luoghi di produzione. La struttura lignea del tetto è coibentata con ovatta di cellulosa e Pavatex, mentre la traspirazione delle pareti è garantita da spesso intonaco a calce e pellicole anti-vapore. Il 40 per cento del fabbisogno di riscaldamento proviene dall’apporto dell’energia solare. ○

the ceiling and create two separate areas, for the bedroom and the bathroom. Their presence sets out some winding and unexpected routes, contrasting with the geometric rigour of the wooden trusses. On the ground floor, which is raised to prevent it from being flooded by the often swollen Queffleut River that runs close to the property, are located the hall and a laundry, lit up by bright yellow cupboards. The adjoining garage and storeroom, left at the original level, are closed by a sliding wooden door that harks back to the origins of the structure. The two storeys of the house are linked by a spiral wooden staircase, whose ash steps are “hung” from the ceiling with posts of wood and metal. A factor in the choice of natural materials has been the proximity of the places where they were produced. The wooden structure of the roof is insulated with cellulose wadding and Pavatex, while the breathing of the walls is ensured by a thick coat of lime plaster and vapour barriers. Forty per cent of the energy needed for heating comes from the sun.
