SIAMO A VALE DE CAMBRA, un comune 50 chilometri a sud di Porto, lungo una strada discontinua che alterna villette kitsch, condomini anonimi e capannoni industriali. Qui lo studio portoghese Summary ha da poco completato un edificio multifunzionale che applica un particolare sistema prefabbricato da montare in soli tre giorni – il sistema Gomos – ispirato ai moduli di calcestruzzo delle infrastrutture di drenaggio dell’acqua. Il volume è costituito da due piani indipendenti con accesso a differenti quote (quindi privi di scale e ascensori), e con funzioni diverse, pubblica al piano terreno (una panetteria e uno spazio per eventi) e residenziale al primo piano.

WE ARE IN VALE DE CAMBRA, a municipality 50 kilometres to the south of Porto, along a discontinuous road lined with small kitsch villas, nondescript blocks of flats and industrial sheds. Here the Portuguese studio Summary has recently completed a multifunctional building to which it has applied a particular method of prefabrication that permits the assembly of a house in just three days – the Gomos system – inspired by the concrete modules used for the construction of sewer pipes. The volume consists of two independent storeys with access at different levels (and so there are no stairs or lifts) and with different functions, public on the ground floor (a bakery and a space for events) and residential on the first floor.

This is the third building that Summary has realized in this way, and the studio has two more under construction (a house in the middle of a wood and a nursery school). “The ground floor functions as a slab on top

I sei “oggetti” di cui parla sono sei unità residenziali di 45 metri quadrati, ognuna con il proprio ingresso. Tre sono pensate per soggiorni brevi – da qui infatti partono numerose escursioni e percorsi in mountain-bike – le altre tre per affitti a lungo termine, sempre a prezzi accessibili. La metratura ridotta rende le unità confortevoli per due persone (c’è una sola camera da letto) ma «sopra ogni bagno una piccola alcova consente di pernottare in condizioni insolite. Questa camera extra ha una finestra, visibile nella parte superiore della facciata posteriore. E i bambini la adorano», commenta Gonçalves.

Ciò che contraddistingue il sistema Gomos ideato da Summary rispetto ad altre tecniche di prefabbricazione, spiega l’architetto, è che combina rapidità e semplicità d’installazione con una altissima qualità. Tutti i moduli sono di calcestruzzo ad alta resistenza; lo strato isolante è racchiuso all’interno delle pareti, dunque difficilmente si danneggia e non si creano ponti termici; le partizioni interne sono robusti pannelli di calcestruzzo, e non semplice cartongesso. Inoltre i moduli sono prodotti in fabbrica in condizioni molto controllate, il che limita gli of which is set a group of six freely arranged and oriented objects,” explains the architect Samuel Gonçalves, founder of the studio. Three are intended for short stays – the location is in fact the point of departure for numerous treks and mountain-bike trails – while the other three will be let on long-term leases, but at affordable rents. Their small size makes the units suitable for two people (they have only one bedroom) but “a small alcove above each bathroom can be used for guests to stay overnight in exceptional circumstances. This extra room has a window, visible in the upper part of the rear façade. And children love it,” comments Gonçalves.

What distinguishes the Gomos system devised by Summary from other techniques of prefabrication, explains the architect, is that it combines speed and simplicity of installation with very high quality. All the modules are made of high-strength concrete; the layer of insulation is embedded in the walls, which makes it hard to damage, and so no thermal bridges are created; the internal partitions are sturdy panels made of concrete and not just plasterboard. Significa che dobbiamo definire nuove modalità rapide per accogliere questa popolazione svincolandoci dalle tecniche costruttive classiche. Con l’aumento della domanda inoltre l’offerta tende a diminuire, il che si traduce in un aumento dei prezzi al metro quadrato. L’unica soluzione è l’edilizia off-site. La prefabbricazione a nostro parere sostituirà progressivamente l’edilizia tradizionale». ○

The demand for speed is a global phenomenon today, points out Gonçalves. “There is a strong trend of urban migration. At present less than 3.5 billion people live in cities, but by 2030 this will have risen to 5 billion. It means that we are going to have to come up with new and rapid ways of accommodating this population by moving away from traditional techniques of construction. With the increase in demand, moreover, the supply tends to diminish, resulting in an increase in the cost per square metre. The only solution is off-site building. Prefabrication in our view is going to gradually take the place of traditional construction.” ○

Le pareti divisorie, le porte e i componenti fissi (cucine e bagni) sono gli unici elementi interni progettati dallo studio portoghese. The dividing walls, the doors, kitchens and bathrooms are the only internal elements designed by Summary.

Le unità residenziali hanno ingressi autonomi e sono isolate acusticamente le une dalle altre. Lo spazio pubblico al piano terreno è stato progettato all’insegna della flessibilità. The residential units have independent entrances and a complete acoustic separation between the different units. The multi-services, public space on the ground floor is conceived in a very flexible way.
