DEMOCRATIC ART ON DISPLAY
LONDRA È LA LORO MUSA DA SEMPRE. L’opera di Gilbert & George è in fondo un diario di quella città e della sua cultura, in cui si sono formati fin dal loro incontro alla Saint Martin’s School of Art, avvenuto nel 1967. «Non avremmo mai voluto essere da un’altra parte», commentano all’unisono in occasione della mostra Gilbert & George – The Locarno Exhibition al Museo Casa Rusca di Locarno (fino al 18 ottobre). Obiettivo principale del loro lavoro è produrre un’arte democratica ad altissimo tasso di comunicazione su temi universali come sesso, razza, religione, politica, identità. «Londra è tutto quello che ci circonda, la città più nervosa del mondo. Noi, con la nostra opera, siamo parte di quel lato oscuro dell’East London», un quartiere multietnico dove hanno casa-studio, un luogo che nutre di stimoli visivi il loro immaginario da sempre, come racconta la mostra stessa. Qui scorre una selezione di sessanta opere, scandite in cinque gruppi. Sono realizzate tra il 2008 e il 2016. Invadono le sale i consueti cromatismi timbrici, le proporzioni imponenti e una composizione ricorrente, basata sulla simmetria speculare. (Cristiana Campanini)
LONDON HAS ALWAYS BEEN THEIR MUSE. The work of Gilbert & George is basically a diary of that city and its culture, and the place where they have always worked ever since they met at the Saint Martin’s School of Art in 1967. “We would never have wanted to be anywhere else,” they comment in unison on the occasion of Gilbert & George – The Locarno Exhibition at Museo Casa Rusca in Locarno (until 18 October). This partnership turned artwork started with the legendary performance The Singing Sculpture (1970), in which the two themselves appeared as “living sculptures”. “The main aim of their work is to produce a democratic kind of art that is highly communicative on universal themes like sex, race, religion, politics and identity. “London is everything that surrounds us, the most nervous city in the world. We and our work are part of that dark side of East London,” a multi-ethnic neighbourhood where they have their studio-home, a place that has always fed their creative world with visual stimuli, as the exhibition itself suggests. It features a selection of 60 works divided into five groups, produced between 2008 and 2016.
