STANZE SENZA TEMPO TIMELESS ROOMS
Non manca un omaggio a Carlo Scarpa / The Parisotto+Formenton studio has imparted a new ambience to a meticulously restored Renaissance palazzo in Verona. The secret lies in the choice of an essential and respectful language for the new insertions, made up of a few codified elements. And including a homage to Carlo Scarpa
IN THE HISTORICAL FABRIC OF VERONA, the Parisotto+Formenton practice (with studios in Padua and Milan) have recently restored an entire Renaissance palazzo, built by the noble family whose coat of arms can still be seen in the arcade of the courtyard at its entrance. The building with a floor space of around two thousand square metres was in an extremely fragmented state. Although it has always been used for residential purposes, all trace of the original layout had been lost as a result of the alterations made to it over the centuries. Through a painstaking process of stripping and removal the old sequence of rooms has been recovered and a number of forgotten architectural elements have been brought back to light, including a 14th-century arch that had been walled up for decades, which now frames the view of the garden and is one of the strongpoints of the project.
The elegant iron frame designed by the architects almost turns it into a work of art, and it is an example of the extreme craftsman-like attention to detail that has allowed the designers to achieve an incisive essentiality in the dialogue between ancient container and new intervention, obtaining living spaces of great quality for their clients. The layers of history laid down in the palazzo – with its decorated fireplaces, surfaces of Venetian terrazzo mosaic and wroughtiron balustrades – became at one and the same time an inspiration and a challenge in the definition of the contemporary language. Parisotto+Formenton’s choice was to develop a

Sono un omaggio a Carlo Scarpa il disegnahomogeneous and to some extent simplified set of materials and finishes that would lend unity to the whole: the original wooden floors have been stained a dark colour, the new doors are all made of walnut and the bathrooms are faced with marble. The motif of the arch, also present in the openings in the façade, is proposed again in the interiors as an element of connection between the rooms, and outlines evocative views. The palazzo has three floors above ground and one below. The original main staircase that leads from the entrance hall to the first floor still has its magnificent wrought-iron railing, while the new secondary staircase is a sculptural element of local grey stone. The newly inserted materials and colours seek to establish a harmony with the warm atmosphere of the large rooms, in which effects of light and shade interplay in a delicate manner. On the walls a marmorino plaster with a matt and textured finish enhances the precious vestiges of the past, such as the fireplaces and a stone sink. The original floors have also been reclaimed, deliberately leaving visible the small blemishes that tell the story of the people who have lived in these rooms through the centuries. The sensitively
