Dialogue of style

IN AN APARTMENT IN BRUSSELS THE FURNISHINGS AND OBJECTS BY GREAT MASTERS OF DESIGN INTERACT WITH WORKS OF ART IN AN ECLECTIC NARRATIVE.

Funky, colorful, vintage, chic and more. The home of Michel Penneman in Brussels has an eclectic spirit, impossible to sum up in one term. The Belgian architect has applied his modernist vision to transform a structure from the 1930s into a stylistic patchwork with countless overtones. The walls are now pale, the spaces well-connected by large openings. The floors are neutral, with vintage wood in the living-dining zone, polished cement in the kitchen and carpeting in the nighttime area. Colorful details are joined by important works of art and traditional ethnic crafts, including Afghan kilims. Penneman has a very personal way of generating a dialogue between objects and architectural details. An original language where elegant spaces can be used in a very free way. Iconic pieces like the Algol tv set by Richard Sapper and Marco Zanuso coexist with ethnic furnishings and art. The living area features two vintage wood-frame chairs and two Butterfly stools by Sori Yanagi from 1954. On the wall near the large painting Ecriture

n°34 by Jo Delahaut, there is a neon piece by Lieven De Boeck, Let us be us. In the kitchen, with Mariolina chairs by Enzo Mari for Magis, the walls seem to become an even more silent backdrop, underlining the accents of color. The chromatic minimalism flows into the bedroom zone, spreading quiet serenity: the limited range of hues are in tune with the iconic Kartell bedside tables and the canvas by Carlos Perez. In the studio, a carpet and the A’dammer cabinet are both in a characteristic mustard color.
