The color of the island
BLUE IS THE LEITMOTIF OF A HOUSE IN CAPRI THAT REPLICATES THE STYLE AND ATMOSPHERE OF THE 1950S WITH AFFECTION AND WIT.
«Blue is the color of Capri. The Faraglioni even host the world’s only colony of blue lizards... I decided to make it a recurring trademark in this house, a way of anchoring it to the place». These are the words of Pietro Del Vaglio, the designer behind the reinterpretation of the interiors of a three-story building that was once the Hotel Carlton. Overlooking the Marina Piccola, blue armchairs stand on a blue terrace with thin white-gold ceramic strips, like whitecaps. «Capri has always seduced artists and intellectuals. My interior design evokes a precise moment, the 1950s, fundamental for the evolution of the island’s free-thinking charm. This house occupies one of the three levels of the building, as a refuge for an enlightened entrepre-
neur». The furnishings are simple without being minimal, intriguing in their refined dissonances, suited to the quiet rhythms of vacation time. The living room features a custom triangular table in blue painted glass and steel, designed by Del Vaglio, around which to place a violet Womb sofa by Saarinen (Knoll, 1946) and two very green P22 hairs by Patrick Norguet (Cassina, 2013). In the kitchen, a circular wall cabinet like an abstract painting – a blue circle containing a compartment with two doors, one green, the other fuchsia – overlooks the Spin round table by Gino Carollo and violet Conference chairs by Eero Saarinen. The surrounding landscape offers a luxuriant park with a view of the sea.
