THE MERCHANT OF VENICE
THE MERCHANT OF VENICE
Marco Vidal and the new way to signature scents.
Modern scents were born in Venice in 1075, a thousand years ago, when Princess Theodora Dukas, sister of Byzantine Emperor Michael VII, married doge Domenico Selvo. The new Duchess, an elegant and sophisticated woman, introduced some revolutionary customs: the use of a sort of fork, thus creating a scandal, make-up, dance and...scents! It was a real revolution during those smelly and dark ages. That’s the beginning of an incredible story. Over the centuries, Venice has become the heart of the world production of scents, as well as the trade centre of raw material, spices, essential oils and precius stones. A great contribution to this story is given by family Vidal with Mavive, a brand founded in 1987 by Massimo Vidal. This successful company derived from the well-known family business, Vidal Perfumes, created in 1900 by Angelo Vidal. According to Venetian tradition, he began trading spices and colonial goods from the East and created a pioneering laboratory of perfumery. Despite the great international success, Mavive is still a family business. To tell the story of fragrances, that’s spanning a millennium, family Vidal has created, with the Civic Museums Foundation, the Perfume Museum. In the beautiful setting of Palazzo Mocenigo of San Stae, the origin of Venetian perfume art is illustrated in detail: ancient bottles, books of recipes, revolutionary inventions, the discovery of alcohol (never used before) to dilute oil and fat essences. Even soap is an invention by the Venetians, who were the first to use it for their personal hygiene. Some laws were enacted to protect this secret, especially after the formula was stolen and sold to Marseille. In the “Olfactory Section” of the museum, visitors are guided by a series of towers that give off scents, and they can discover the different fragrances that characterize our life and nature. Olfactory stations are placed in a setting that reminds of the laboratory of an old Muschiere (Venetian perfume manufacturer) with distillers, stills and containers of mosses and flowers to be distilled. History pervades the products by Mavive: the glass art of Murano, the scents from the naval caravans (mude)... The Merchant of Venice collection, official product of the museum, consists of six fragrances, all contained in bottles characterized by beautiful colours and transparency (obtained from a sophisticated technique), inspired by the ancient creations of Murano’s master glassmakers. The merchants of Venice organized their journeys on naval caravans, called “mude”. Protected by the Serenissima, they had pre-programmed destinations: Alexandria of Egypt, Tunis, Beirut and many other ports were themselves sorting centres of precious wood, spices, oils produced in the exotic East. The Merchant of Venice Collection, and in particular the olfactory pyramids of Murano Collection, are composed of ingredients directly linked to the mude and in each fragrance we can find some specific elements of a particular Mediterranean area. The brand also includes several lines of perfumes and products for body care and home, all of them have been created and developed with particular care for tradition.
