- A sneak preview of what’s on in 2016. The year that Forte dei Marmi will be dedicating to Thomas Mann, ninety summers after the illuminating sojourn that inspired the author from Lübeck to write the novella Mario and the Magician. It was 1926, and Forte dei Marmi – Torre di Venere in Mann’s fiction – is painted as an elitist retreat frequented by the aristocracy and the upper middle class fleeing the social bustle of nearby Porto Clemente (Viareggio). In a loutish, rather bigoted Italy, as mute and powerless as the public which, at an evening performance at the Mutuo Soccorso theater, is completely taken in by the banter and hypnotic illusions of Cipolla the Magician. Ninety years is a long time, but Forte has defended and tenaciously held its position. It has become, in its own way, a model. An example. So much so that – to return to literature and another illustrious “friend of Forte,” Aldous Huxley – we might dare to dream of a new world – and that the Germanic (and not) visitors attracted by the celebrations for Mann’s ninetieth anniversary will find, in 2016 in Torre di Venere, a better Italy than Mann described in Mario and the Magician. We know, it won’t depend on Forte alone. But a little bit, it will. -
