A progettarlo fu l’architetto Giuseppe Pagano.
ARCHITECTURES IN GREEN | The gentle touch of the wind, the warmth of the sun low in the west, the whirr of bike tires on asphalt; silent parks and historic homes. A bike ride through the Roma Imperiale garden district, backwards in time to the origins of summer vacationing in Forte | The caress of the breeze, the warmth of the sun filtered through the crowns of the trees, embroidering tanned skin with light, a time-stop silence broken only by the muted chirr of bicycle wheels and soft laughter . . . This is one of the rites of a Forte dei Marmi vacation, one of the most welcome and soothing, especially for guests coming from the big cities with their traffic, smog, and deafening noise levels. The rite we are talking about is the biciclettata del pomeriggio, a de rigueur afternoon moment in life in Forte, when the day’s sun and sea are behind us but it’s still too early to start preparations for those other exclusive rites of the evening and the night. A moment when one’s only desire is to make the day last, to enjoy the cooler air and the softer light both sieved by pines, holm-oaks, planetrees and all the other plants lief to extend their full, fresh embraces. On the track

of this immutable rite, in many senses “out of time,” there’s a stop we might say is compulsory. Roma Imperiale, the magic quadrilateral, its sides Via XX Settembre, Via della Barbiera, Via Nizza and Viale Morin, where luxury, beauty, art and perfection still triumph as they once did. And as in the past, offer themselves to vacationers clip-clopping lazily along the streets on their two-wheeled steeds. Here, in an earthly paradise, “one walks through a transparent and phantasmagorical beauty,” in the words of British writer Aldous Huxley. Man’s hand, later, always and only embellished it, adding to the natural beauty of the territory since the late 1800s when the area – called “Roma Imperiale” only from 1926 onward, from the name of the public limited company that zoned and subdivided it – was first carved up and “colonized.” Among the first people to “discover” the area and to fall in love with it were several German artists, poets and painters such as Erwin and Isolde Kurz – or even earlier, Swiss painter Arnold Böcklin – who purchased lots on the shore to build their summer homes. “Isolde was a well-known author and foreign artists and art historians gravitated to her; the interiors of her villino (at no. 38 on Viale Morin) were decorated by her friend and painter Hildebrand; Romer is the author of the fish sculpted on the front door,” Tessa Nardini and Stefania Neri wrote in their book Torre di Venere, vita morte e miracoli al Forte dei Marmi. The “colony” members were all linked in some manner to Florentine physician Carlo Vanzetti and his colleague Edgar Kurz, who recommended Forte as a destination for the much-touted heliotherapy and thalassotherapy treatments in great vogue at the time. Back then, the sand ran up as far as the pinewood, a continuum between sea and land. An exotic spectacle, unequalled for those who came from the cold lands of the north and of Italy knew only the art cities: Rome, Florence, Venice. A spectacle, a “great beauty” renewed even today, reflected in the daydreaming eyes of the big-city tourists who then as now look only for quiet, for exuberant nature, for pure, unpolluted air. And just as did the intellectuals and the artists of the last century, want only to reinvigorate bodies and souls fatigued by the rhythms of city living or, perhaps, to refresh a dimmed artistic inspiration. A beauty dear, also, to the great painter Carlo Carrà, who, “dragged” here by his sculptor friend Arturo Dazzi, in these green streets between the sea and the Fiumetto painted his Forte dei Marmi. The Villino Carrà, built after the 1926 subdivision, that we see a short distance from the sea as we pedal along Via Roma Imperiale, is a MiBACT listed building. Designed by architect Giuseppe Pagano, it is furnished and decorated with everyday articles and artworks left by such friends of Carrà as Galassi, Manzù, Griselli, and many others. Every villa here, every carefully-tended garden, has a story to tell, and each is interwoven with the histories of the foremost Italian and foreign families of the last century. From the Morins to the Agnellis, from the Olivettis to that Giulio Pacelli, nephew of Pope Pius XII; from Pedrazzi, politician and friend to Curzio Malaparte, whose villa, another listed building, celebrates medieval architecture and decoration, to the “king of steel” Siemens, who cornered an substantial parcel of prime land about a kilometer in length and whose villa dominates the seaside boulevard. And to the Morattis, whose prestigious villa now rises where there was once a farm with its farmhouse. Between one push on the pedals and the next, a glance through the rare small gaps in the dense hedges, or through the gates that protect the privacy of front-page lives, is another part of the rite of the biciclettata del pomeriggio al Forte, one that brings into focus details of lives of other times that still feel contemporary, perhaps thanks to the love and care that this territory has inspired in the hearts of so many Italian and foreign artists and famous personalities and families. Everyone who is or was anyone has travelled these same streets, these shady streets with their sea breezes. And so we too pass by . . . pedaling lazily through the last hours of a summer afternoon.
