Immersed in art
Paolo Buroni’s visual art turns viewers into actors on a virtual stage Con la visual art di Paolo Buroni si diventa attori su un palcoscenico virtuale
Paolo Buroni turns images into art. Art that stirs emotions. Emotions that turn into an experience. The multivision designer started out as a photojournalist working for Grazia Neri. “It was an important experience,” he tells us, “because photography isn’t just about a need to capture reality, it pushes you to create a story through pictures.” This led Buroni to coin a new visual language. “Parallel to my photographic work, I also started creating multivision art installations,” he continues. That dazzling new genre has now become the artist’s personal signature. “The idea is to meld images with architecture and more, by transforming a space and producing a visual language that provides an immersive experience,” Buroni continues. In short, his work completely cuts out the remove between artwork and viewer. In fact, the latter becomes part of the art. “That way there are no limits to creativity just as there are no restrictions on where you can stage those installations.”
Buroni has turned everything from the cupola of the Mole Antonelliana to the Museum of Cinema, both in Turin, to the CCTV Tower in Beijing, Milan’s Duomo di Milano, the San Siro Football Stadium and the Grand Place in Brussels, into astonishingly theatrical spaces. His most important projects include the design and art direction of the new Museo Enzo Ferrari in Modena, where, for the last four years, he has curated the immersive multimedia show
«Parallelamente all’attività di fotografo ho cominciato a creare installazioni artistiche in multivisione», continua Buroni.
with his 3D artist son Alex with Stark as technical partner.
Installations this complex demand massive technical support. “When I started out, there was nothing on the market that did what I needed. So I joined forces with a team of designers and engineers with whom I developed a new image projector powerful enough to communicate my artistic vision in increasingly large spaces,” he explains. This resulted in the foundation of Stark, a company based in Pesaro which, under Buroni’s leadership, has become a benchmark for excellence in its field. Now every time Paolo Buroni creates new installations, Stark develops innovative solutions. “The added values lies in the fact that my creations don’t have to adapt to existing technology. The technology is actually created and evolves with it.”
Urbino’s Palazzo Ducale, for instance, was once home the manuscripts from Federico da Montefeltro’s library which were later purchased by the Vatican and archived in its Apostolic Library. “I wanted to see those masterpieces back in their original home so I imagined virtual books that came out of the walls of this hall in 3D. I designed an installation that allowed those antique codes be put back in place thanks to a 3D Virtual Library by Stark. The visitor can select and take out volumes which come out in 3D from the walls by just swiping their air with their hand, and then leaf through them touchless,” says Buroni.
cause their interiors are quite well delineated and confined. The genius lies in turning them into emotional experiences by applying the same concepts of “immersitivity” that Buroni has used in his other art work. “Thanks to Stark we have come up with something absolutely new: we turned an entire wall of the beach area aboard the latest Rossinavi 50-metre into a ‘virtual sea’ with an interactive Stark Image Wall. Right now we’re working on a 100-metre Benetti megayacht which will have 300 square metres of immersive glass walls with screens of up to 18 metres high that will create fantastic landscapes and interactive effects,” says Buroni. Another project is an interactive virtual mosaic for swimming pools that can be used to conjure up up images and music.
Stark has grown over the years and now has a 3,000 square metre headquarters. That said, it still feels like a family firm with a brilliant “Family Team” behind it. Buroni’s wife, Sabine Lindner, is a graphic and visual artist while their son Alex is a creative designer and daughter Alice is an architect. Together they are the backbone, literal and creative, of Stark.
