“From the very first approach, the first layout idea, my intent is always to create an exhilarating look and a highly personal style that reflects the spirit of its owner and will put his stamp on the yacht itself.” The words of Frank Neubelt. “A yacht design is efficient only if you know how yachts work. Naval architecture is the fundamental element. Yacht designers need to have that foundation in their skillset to be able to develop successful yachts based on their experience and passion on and for the sea.” The German yacht designer and naval architect Frank Neubelt makes no bones about his design philosophy which he honed in the course of a career crafting yachts with highly personal layouts and interiors. Neubelt’s career stems, in fact, from a childhood spent sailing aboard the family 44-footer which sparked his love of the sea. A passion also fostered by his time in the Navy which led him into design where he initially worked with X-Yachts founder Niels Jeppesen, before striking out on his own. In 1990, in fact, Neubelt founded Newcruise and in the ensuing years produced a string of designs that won him a long list of leading international awards. Notable yachts included Moonen Shipyard’s 38-metre Victoria del Mar by Moonen Shipyard and Hotchya Yachts’ 36-metre Gaia, both built using a special cost-reduction system developed by Neubelt that brought both owners and commissions pouring in to Newcruise. That meant more plaudits too. Lots of them. Cases in point would be the 67-metre Triple-Seven built by Thyssenkrupp Marine and splashed in 2006, the 74-metre Siren for German yard Nobiskrug, and, of course, Luna, the 115-metre explorer built and launched in 2010 by Lloyd
«Il mio intento, fin dal primo approccio, dalla prima idea di layout, è quello di creare per ciascuno dei miei yacht un look esaltante e uno stile molto personale che rifletterà lo spirito del suo armatore divenendone la sua firma sullo yacht stesso». E ancora: «Il design di uno yacht è efficace solo se conosci come funziona uno yacht. L’architettura navale è l’elemento imprescindibile. Gli yacht designer dovrebbero avere questo fondamento nel proprio know-how per sviluppare yacht di successo in base alla loro esperienza e passione sul e per il mare». Così Frank Neubelt, yacht designer e architetto navale tedesco con una lunga carriera all’insegna di yacht dal layout e con interni dallo styling molto personali, riassume la propria filosofia progettuale. Una carriera qquella di Neubelt che ha le radici nell’infanzia trascorsa sul 44 piedi di famiglia. È lì che nasce la passione per il mare.
La passione nata dall’esperienza in Marina lo porta alla progettazione collaborando inizialmente con Niels Jeppesen, il creatore degli X-Yachts, per poi intraprendere un percorso professionale autonomo. Neubelt nel 1990 fonda lo studio Newcruise e negli anni firma una serie di progetti che gli valgono i maggiori riconoscimenti internazionali. Tra i tanti yacht, il 38 metri Victoria del Mar di Moonen Shipyard e il 36 metri Gaia di Hotchya Yachts, entrambi realizzati con un particolare sistema di riduzione dei costi elaborato da Neubelt che portano a Newcruise armatori e commesse. Un successo che significa altri riconoscimenti. Per esempio quelli assegnati al 67 metri Triple-Seven costruito da Thyssenkrupp Marine e varato nel 2006, al 74 metri Siren del cantiere tedesco Nobiskrug, o ancora a Luna, explorer di 115 metri costruito e varato nel 2010 da
Werf & Stahlbau Shipyard. All craft that centre around the innovative combination of a particular kind of hull and a new interior construction system developed by Neubelt and Newcruise with Nobiskrug. A solution also used by other designers for yachts of the likes of the 68-metre Sycara, the 49-metre Odessa and Project 783, a 70-metre for Imperial Yachts. Despite all that success, after 22 years, Neubelt left Newcruise in 2012, to embark on a whole new adventure with his own studio, Frank Neubelt Yacht Design.
“The time had come to tackle the new superyacht phase in the offing. I wanted to focus in particular on the younger generation of owners and also on this new communications era and the changing global economy. The keys to the future were: fantastic materials, stunning designs and engineering technologies across the board to produce the best of the best, all drawn together by the kind of know-how and experience it takes decades in to build up.” A future that for Neubelt also meant going one step further and founding German Yacht Couture. The Hamburg-based yacht design hub’s motto is “create, innovate and build” and is home to the various businesses that make up the German Yacht Couture community. “The GYC philosophy is to attract owners’ attention by building their yachts in the leading German and international yards, flanked professionally by this innovative and absolutely contemporary design studio Lloyd Werf & Stahlbau Shipyard. Yacht basati sull’innovativa combinazione di una particolare carena e di un nuovo sistema di realizzazione degli interni sviluppata da Neubelt e Newcruise con il cantiere tedesco Nobiskrug. Una soluzione utilizzata anche da altri designer per yacht come il 68 metri Sycara, il 49 metri Odessa e Project 783, il 70 metri di Imperial Yachts. Nonostante i successi, nel 2012, dopo 22 anni, Neubelt lascia Newcruise per lanciarsi in una nuova avventura: lo studio Frank Neubelt Yacht Design.
«Era giunto il momento di prepararmi ad affrontare la nuova fase dei superyacht che stava arrivando, con una particolare attenzione a una generazione di armatori più giovani, ma anche alla nuova era della comunicazione e ai cambiamenti dell’economia globale. Utilizzare materiali fantastici, design stupefacenti e tecnologie ingegneristiche in tutti gli aspetti per realizzare il meglio del meglio, il tutto unito al know-how e all’esperienza acquisite in decenni di progettazione, erano le chiavi per il futuro». Un futuro che per Neubelt ha significato un ulteriore passo con la creazione di German Yacht Couture.
Un vero e proprio hub dello yacht design con sede ad Amburgo che ha come slogan “creare, innovare, costruire” nel quale lavorano varie realtà che costituiscono la comunità di German Yacht Couture. «La filosofia di GYC è richiamare l’attenzione degli armatori realizzando i loro
concept. Yachts designed and developed the German-way by an internationally-qualified staff using leading-edge technological and computational tools for both interiors and décor. All backed by a portfolio of international partners and specialist agencies with links to GYC and which, aside from purely design and architecture-related work, also do the financial management and legal side of the whole project.”
The set-up brought by Frank Neublet to German Yacht Couture has its roots in his concept of what a designer’s job is all about. “Because I do this terribly serious work, I can call myself a designer, a title that stands for creativity and technical knowledge about how to build a yacht by putting together the right team. My philosophy is they are not just designers of elegant moving objects. Any yacht whether it’s built to showcase luxury or elegance or simply to cruise solo or explore the world’s seas, has to be safe. It has to comply with technical and construction rules to allow people to sail in all kinds of conditions and enjoy the beauty of the sea to the fullest.” yacht nei migliori cantieri tedeschi e a livello mondiale, affiancati professionalmente da questo innovativo e assolutamente attuale concetto di studio di design e progettazione. Il tutto arricchito da partner internazionali e agenzie specializzate collegate con GYC che, oltre agli aspetti più propriamente progettuali e di design, si occupa anche della gestione finanziaria e degli aspetti legali del progetto».
Un’impostazione quella data da Frank Neubelt a German Yacht Couture che deriva dal suo intendere il lavoro di yacht designer. «Facendo questo lavoro terribilmente sul serio mi posso definire yacht designer, titolo che sta per creatività e conoscenza tecnica su come costruire uno yacht formando il giusto team. Seguendo la mia filosofia non sono semplicemente il designer di eleganti oggetti che si muovono. Ogni yacht costruito sia per mostrare il lusso o l’eleganza o semplicemente per andare da soli in crociera o, ancora, per solcare tutti i mari, deve essere sicuro. Deve sempre rispettare i dettati tecnici e costruttivi per permetterci di navigare in ogni condizione e godere di tutta la bellezza del mare».
