SPRADLING: AN INNOVATIVE LEADER IN COATED FABRICS
For over 50 years, Spradling has offered design and performance solutions for nearly every application to enhance any upholstered environment. Spradling’s coated fabrics are engineered to meet the needs of the Automotive, Marine and Hospitality markets. A well-established company they are flexible enough to support a diverse range of clients. It is their ultimate goal to be the preferred and most trusted designer of coated fabrics and upholstery globally. We have met Alexander Paulsen, Head of Sales for EMEA for Spradling’s Marine Division and his colleague Luis Castaneda, Area Sales Manager to ask them a few questions:
Why use Coated Fabrics instead other type of products?
“Coated fabrics are the most versatile option you could choose if you are looking for diversity in design, colour, textures or technical features. You can create almost every texture in an infinity of colourways. Protective finishes will prevent the material from getting stained, ease the cleanability, make it resistant to UV-light or inhibit the growth of bacteria, mold and mildew. Coated fabrics provide a longer life-span than fabrics or leather. They are durable enough to withstand wear and tear. At the same time coated fabrics are an ecosmart material choice because they are energy and resource efficient, recyclable and long-lasting. Being leather-free, they are a 100% vegan option that does not come from animal agriculture (nowadays responsible for a high percentage of all greenhouse-gas emissions).”

bution facilities in the United States and coordinating with sister distribution centres in Germany, Spain, the United Kingdom and Mexico. Today we are servicing over 75 countries around the world. In 2009, we acquired Marine Specialties Group ( MSG), a division of G&T Industries in the United States. Spradling and MSG have enjoyed a partnership for more than 25 years, with MSG providing marketing and distribution to the marine and recreational vehicle ( RV) industries. This acquisition permitted direct access to the marine market in the USA. In 2008 Spradling launched its first Marine Collection of articles engineered for the Yachting market in Europe. Since then we have been developing our range of products, offering new designs and colour trends. It is essential for us to listen to our customers. We constantly work on improving our product and service offer in response to the what the market demands.
What is the most recognized product in the marine market? Why its recognized?
“Silvertex® is definitely a best-seller throughout all industry sectors that we serve. Not only suitable for exterior applications, but also an excellent choice of comfort and design for yacht interiors like headboards, bedframes as well as wall- and headlining. Two years ago we added Hitch® to our extensive range of fabric-like textures. Since then it has won several awards including the renowned RedDot Design award in 2016. Both are included in our Marine and Surfaces Collections for exterior and interior decoration. Moreover, Spradling has been nominated in the last two years with Germania, Spagna, Gran Bretagna e Messico. Oggigiorno i nostri prodotti vengono utilizzati in 75 paesi.
its Surfaces and Skyline® collections for the DAME Design Award, the largest marine competition of its kind. It focuses attention on the art and science of design in all aspects, from styling to functionality, and innovation and even packaging. ”
What is Spradling doing in terms of new designs?
“We are constantly monitoring the market. We visit fairs in diverse sectors, even in those we are not directly present. We offer innovative design solutions to create distinctive looks that not everybody offers in the market. To give an example: we work with a translucent printing technique that combines translucency in colour with a layering technique resulting in a new level of sophistication in printed-coated fabrics. We have an in-house engraving technology which permits us to easier replicate any imaginable texture. Plus, we offer stateof-the-art digital printing.”
There is a perception that the production of the products made of PVC are not ECO-Friendly. What is Spradling doing regarding this topic? Are your Coated Fabrics Eco-Friendly?
“We are well aware that the PVC industry has been pictured as a threat to the environment. But there is a flipside of the coin, which is withheld from public opinion. We have taken many steps towards eco-friendly coated fabrics production: our manufacturing facilities in Colombia and Costa Rica have been equipped with state-of-the-art technologies that make use of natural resources and carefully prevent harmful by-products from being released into our surroundings. Our production facility in Costa Rica is Environmental Management System ( EMS) ISO 14001 certified since 2010 and has recently been certified to be a company with a Carbon Neutral Process. At the Colombia facility, 85% of waste incurred is reused in the creation of new material. The remaining 15% is disposed of appropriately through incineration or sold to third parties for other production processes. The useful life of Coated Fabrics is substantially longer than any other synthetic material. And these are only a few reasons to challenge any smear campaign against synthetics and coated fabrics.”
