It all started some years ago. The entry on the scene of the most famous architecture and design brands belonging to sectors other than the yachting one gave rise to a process of contamination which, in a short time, rewrote the way of conceiving interiors, especially on big-sized yachts. The rest is history.
Today, the spotlight is on outdoor areas, for which designers have developed increasingly original and uncommon living solutions. The are two main reasons for this: on the one hand, the need to make the sea the center of all on-board recreational activities; on the other hand, the research work carried out by the furniture companies in recent times has resulted into a wide range of outdoor lines aimed to forge a new open-air lifestyle.
Added to this is a third reason which could have an even more important impact: the post Covid-19 factor. Isolation, social distancing and the sacrifices experienced in recent months have re-emphasized matters that were previously considered minor, starting right from the need to have contact with the outside world through an outdoor space. The effects of this need will produce new ideas to give further impetus to the way of thinking and living outdoor spaces, thus reinforcing the link between the housing world and yacht design. Alcuni anni fa l’ingresso delle più famose firme dell’architettura nel mondo dello yacht design diede origine a un processo di contaminazione che, in poco tempo, riscrisse il modo di concepire gli interni, soprattutto sui grandi yacht. Oggi a finire sotto la luce dei riflettori sono le aree esterne. Spazi in cui i designer hanno messo a punto soluzioni abitative sempre più originali e inedite. Le ragioni di questo fermento sono principalmente due: da un lato la necessità di portare il mare al centro delle attività ricreative di bordo; dall’altro il lavoro di ricerca svolto dalle aziende dell’arredo che ha offerto un’ampia gamma di linee outdoor pensato per coniare un nuovo stile di vita all’aria aperta.
Considerazioni cui se ne aggiunge un’altra che potrebbe avere un impatto ancora più determinante: ovvero il fattore post Covid-19. L’isolamento e il distanziamento sociale di questi ultimi mesi hanno riportato al centro temi che prima erano marginali, a iniziare proprio dalla necessità di avere uno spazio all’aperto. Un bisogno i cui effetti daranno ulteriore impulso al modo di pensare e di vivere gli ambienti esterni, rinsaldando così il legame tra il mondo del residenziale e quello dello yacht design.

Everything revolves around a set of sails that guarantee effective shelter from the sun rays. There are many advantages, including the proven weather and salt-resistant fabric, which also includes Dacron, and the customization possibilities offered by Kheope thanks to a special motorized Aisi 304 steel structure.
Furthermore, the presence of an anemometer allows automatic closing in case of strong wind. Kolibrie is designed as a standalone installation. The system is equipped with a single offset stainless steel support pole that rests on a pedestal with bearings. 360-degree adjustable, it includes an anemometer and, optionally, the opening-closing system can be manual or motorized. Sea and yachting have been the source of inspiration for Cruise, the Talenti collection designed by Ludovica and Roberto Palomba. More specifically, the Teak range consisting of modular or fixed-structure sofas, living armchairs and chaises longues highlights the wooden base and the use of braided rope that wraps around the armrests and backs of every piece of furniture. Among the collections which have marked the recent debut of Cassina on the outdoor scene there is Sail Out, the line designed by Rodolfo Dordoni. The modular outdoor sofa recalls the soft and enveloping shape of the inrispondenza del ponte piscina o nelle aree pranzo all’aperto. Infine la presenza di un anemometro permette la chiusura automatica in caso di forte vento. Kolibrie è pensato come un’installazione indipendente ed è dotato di un unico palo di sostegno disassato in acciaio inox che poggia su un piedistallo a cuscinetti. Orientabile a 360° include un anemometro e, a scelta, l’apertura-chiusura può essere manuale oppure motorizzata.
Il mondo del mare e della nautica sono stati fonte d’ispirazione anche per la collezione Cruise di Talenti firmata da Ludovica e Roberto Palomba. Nel dettaglio la linea Teak composta da divani modulari o a struttura fissa, poltrone living e poltroncine pranzo, evidenzia la base in legno e l’utilizzo della corda intrecciata che avvolge braccioli e schienali di ogni complemento.

La zona di prua del 63 metri Metis di Benetti adibita a solarium flatable canvas mattresses thanks to the padded bands inserted in pockets delimited by the covering seams. Molo is the name of the new collection created by Dordoni for Kettal. The range includes demountable and reorganizable modules which offer multiple custom solutions to better suit every customer’s need.
The collaboration between B&B and Antonio Citterio, instead, has resulted into the launch of Hybrid, a collection inspired by the seats and sofas of gulets. The collection is an authentic hymn to comfort and relaxation, two concepts that, in the case of the new line designed by Citterio, are revived by the presence of a soft and welcoming padding. The cushions are made with different density materials, designed to accommodate the body and support it at the same time, without sinking. Furthermore, the stated goal of the Hybrid range is to offer itself as a link between indoor and outdoor furnishings.
A very heated topic in the world of yacht design today. “In 2006, we had already explored a design solution that focused on the need to create a communication channel between inside and outside” says Mauro Micheli who, together with Sergio Beretta, is the head of Officina Italiana Design, the official design studio for the Riva range. “The sun terrace, as we called it at the time, was based on the concept of a system of openings on the main deck lounge thanks to which a unique in and out path was generated”, he adds. “This was bottite inserite in tasche delimitate dalle cuciture del rivestimento. Antonio Citterio ha invece sviluppato la collezione Hybrid di B&B che ricorda le sedute e i divani dei caicchi. Un inno al comfort e al relax, concetti che nel caso della nuova linea sono rilanciati dalla presenza di un’imbottitura soffice e accogliente. La cuscinatura è realizzata con materiale a diversa densità, studiata per accogliere il corpo e sostenerlo senza farlo sprofondare. Inoltre, obiettivo dichiarato della gamma Hybrid, è quello di proporsi come anello di congiunzione tra l’arredo interno e quello esterno.
Un tema molto sentito oggi nel mondo dello yacht design. «Già nel 2006 avevamo esplorato una soluzione progettuale per creare un canale di comunicazione tra interno ed esterno» racconta Mauro Micheli che insieme a Sergio Beretta è a capo di Officina Italiana Design, lo studio che oggi firma il design della gamma Riva. «Il sun terrace si basava sul concetto di un sistema di aperture presente sul salone del main deck grazie alle quali si generava un percorso unico in and out» aggiunge Micheli. «Un progetto che anticipava i tempi e che, anche se non si è concretizzato, è stato l’ispirazione per altri lavori, a iniziare dall’SX di Sanlorenzo. The stern section of the Riva 50 metri Race’s upper deck | a truly innovative project for the time and, even though it did not materialize, it was the source of inspiration for many other projects we carried out, starting from the Sanlorenzo SX. In Riva Dolcevita 110, for example, the connection between the living room and the external cockpit is highlighted by the absence of architectural barriers which gives the feeling of living in a single large room. A similar approach, but different in content, has been proposed on the new Riva 50 Metri. On the upper deck, the owner wanted to have a closed space that, smaller than the one found on boats of the same size, favoured the external cockpit which is characterized by a shaded dining area equipped with sliding side windows so as to establish a direct connection with the outside“. Flexibility, modular spaces, increasingly generous outdoor areas. Today these are the coordinates around which the designers’ thinking is directed.
“While in the past a boat concept started from the interior layout, today it must offer the same amount of exterior and interior spaces”, says Francesco Paszkowski who, in 2020, celebrates 30 years of activity. “Outdoor areas are increasingly sought-after. As a result, even boat design is changing and adapting to this new need” – the Italian designer adds - “This is also facilitating the integration process with home-inspired outdoor furniture. L’area di poppa del ponte superiore sul Riva 50 metri Race viene rilanciata dall’assenza di barriere architettoniche che regala la sensazione di vivere un unico grande ambiente. Un approccio simile, ma diverso nei contenuti, è stato proposto sul nuovo Riva 50 metri. Nell’upper deck l’armatore ha voluto uno spazio chiuso più contenuto rispetto alla norma, privilegiando invece il pozzetto esterno che è caratterizzato da una zona pranzo riparata dal sole, ma dotata di vetrate laterali scorrevoli così da stabilire una connessione diretta con l’esterno».
Flessibilità, spazi modulari, aree esterne sempre più generose. Sono queste oggi le coordinate verso le quali s’indirizza il pensiero dei designer. «Se prima il progetto di una barca partiva dal layout degli interni, oggi deve saper offrire una quantità di volumi esterni pari a quelli interni» riflette Francesco Paszkowski che proprio nel 2020 con il suo studio ha tagliato il traguardo dei 30 anni di attività. «Le aree all’aperto sono sempre più richieste, quindi anche il disegno delle barche sta cambiando in funzione di questa esigenza» prosegue il designer fiorentino che aggiunge: «Questo sta facilitando anche il processo d’integrazione con i complimenti d’arredo outdoor che arrivano dal residenziale. Inoltre le barriere architettoniche che prima scandivano la funzione dei singoli ambienti non esistono più. Oggi si cerca di creare questa commistione tra esterno ed interno con quest’ultimo concepito come un ambiente “al fresco” come lo chiamano gli anglosassoni».
The Beach Club of the Dragon 80m with bar-chair Mood by Tribù | no longer exist. Today we are trying to create this combination of exteriors and interiors with the latter conceived as a “cool” environment, as the Anglo-Saxons call it“.
One of latest Italian designer’s works that highlight this trend is the Severin’s, the 55-meter yacht by Baglietto. “The Severin’s fly is designed as a single large surface with multiple functions. In the absence of architectural divisions, the furniture element determines the intended use of a space by defining its function. The concept of flexibility becomes another important element in the design research process. The space itself must be configurable according to the entertainment activities that mark the on-board life at different times of the day“, concludes Paszkowski. Open-air activities therefore conquer the scene, affecting the new design and functional languages.
“To create solutions that eliminate not only visual but also physical distances with the marine element and the external context. I find it is the most stimulating aspect of the project research work today”, states Bernardo Zuccon, head of the Zuccon International Project along with his sister Martina. “I believe that the bond with the sea must be visceral. Today, thanks to the help of technology, it is possible to better enjoy this experience through a series of solutions that offer a close contact with the sea without, however, diminishing the awareness of being always protected in a safe place

Tra i lavori più recenti del designer fiorentino che evidenziano questa tendenza c’è Severin’s il 55 metri di Baglietto. «Il fly di Severin’s è concepito come un’unica grande superficie su cui sono rappresentate diverse funzioni. In assenza di divisioni architettoniche oggi è sempre di più l’elemento d’arredo a determinare la destinazione d’uso di uno spazio definendone la funzione. Il concetto di flessibilità poi diventa un’altra componente importante per la ricerca progettuale. Lo stesso spazio deve essere configurabile a seconda delle attività d’intrattenimento che scandiscono la vita di bordo nei diversi momenti della giornata», conclude Paszkowski.
La vita en-plein air conquista quindi la scena e condiziona i nuovi linguaggi estetici e funzionali. «Escogitare soluzioni che azzerino le distanze non solo visive ma anche fisiche con l’elemento marino e il contesto esterno. Trovo che sia questo oggi l’aspetto più stimolante del lavoro di ricerca progettuale» spiega Bernardo Zuccon, alla guida assieme alla sorella Martina della Zuccon International Project. «Credo che il legame con il mare debba essere viscerale. Oggi grazie all’ausilio della tecnologia è possibile vivere al meglio questa esperienza attraverso una serie di soluzioni che permettono di toccare il mare senza però togliere l’idea di trovarsi sempre protetti in un luogo sicuro come deve essere appunto una barca». Moreover a boat should be lived in the true meaning of the word”, continues Zuccon. “That’s why the continuity of style between inside and outside is essential to make the life experience on board solid and deep. The SL 102 Asimmetrico by Sanlorenzo was designed with this in mind. The interiors, except for the decorative elements, revolve around a palette of colors, such as black, white and the warm tones of the wood that are also found in the exteriors. The result is a uninterrupted flow”. Just like it’s happening in the housing sector, where yacht design-inspired solutions are increasingly adopted.
And Marco Bonelli and Marijana Radovic’s m2Atelier studio is certainly one of the most important yacht design players today.
“In recent times, we have registered an increasing demand, especially in urban contexts and in large cities, to establish a marked connection with the surrounding environment. The use of large glass surfaces has now become a central theme as well as the need for open-air spaces. I am convinced that the design approach will go further and further in this direction, in the future“, says Mr. Bonelli. “We are currently working on a sailing 130-footer whose key element will be precisely what we have called a terrace on the sea”, Marijana Radovic adds.

Un fronte questo nel quale è attivo lo studio m2Atelier di Marco Bonelli e Marijana Radovic. «In questo ultimo periodo abbiamo registrato la richiesta crescente, soprattutto in contesti urbani e nelle grandi città, di stabilire una connessione marcata con l’ambiente circostante. Il tema delle grandi aperture verso l’esterno attraverso l’uso di grandi superfici vetrate è diventato un tema centrale così come l’esigenza di avere a disposizione anche spazi da vivere all’aperto. Sono convinto che in futuro la riflessione a livello progettuale si spingerà sempre di più in questa direzione» commenta Bonelli. «Stiamo seguendo il progetto di un 130 piedi a vela il cui elemento più caratterizzante sarà proprio una terrace on the sea» aggiunge Marijana Radovic. «Un concetto simile» prosegue Radovic «lo abbiamo pensato anche per una casa sul mare collocata in un contesto morfologico verticale caratterizzato da rocce granitiche a picco. These themes are also dear to Carlo Nuvolari who, together with Dan Lenard, has signed numerous successful projects, including the Alfa Nero, the 82-meter yacht by Oceanco, which was perhaps the first megayacht to propose a new way of conceiving outdoor life. “At the time, the input came from the owner who had explicitly asked for easier access to the sea”, says Carlo Nuvolari. “We are studying two projects that will further emphasize this concept. Il tema outdoor sarà poi riproposto in una chiave del tutto inedita anche il prossimo anno quando presenteremo il nuovo tri-deck della linea Grande di Azimut che si distingue per la configurazione della poppa caratterizzata da una doppia terrazza open air che si affaccia sulla beach area» conclude Lantero. Spazi flessibili, ibridazione tra ambienti esterni ed interni. The beach area of the Mangusta GranSport 54 | need to change our approach and find new solutions also on a technical level. The ventilation towers, for example, have represented a great design constraint for the aft spaces. That’s why we have looked for an alternative route to the ventilation ducts of the engine room“, concludes Nuvolari.
Today, the stern section is the area which has undergone the greatest transformations in recent times, thus becoming the linking point between the marine element and life on board.
“The Flexplorer we studied for Cantiere delle Marche” notes Sergio Cutolo (Hydro-tec), the Italian designer that has signed numerous prestigious projects, such as the 80-meter Dragon by Palumbo, “represents perhaps the best of this concept. One of the hallmarks is flexibility, as the name itself evokes. The aft bulwarks of the hull that protect the cockpit are completely folding and, when the tender is launched, they transform this area into a huge 115 -square-meter lounge on the sea. When necessary, this surface can even accommodate a large retractable swimming pool. “This way”, Mr. Cutolo continues, “the cockpit becomes a natural extension of the living area. A continuity also dictated by the absence of the step that usually marked the entrance of the indoor living room on the main deck“.

E proprio la sezione di poppa si conferma oggi come l’area che negli ultimi tempi ha subito le maggiori trasformazioni diventando la cerniera di collegamento tra l’elemento marino e la vita di bordo. «Il Flexplorer che abbiamo studiato per il Cantiere delle Marche» osserva Sergio Cutolo di Hydro-tec che ha all’attivo numerosi progetti tra i quali spicca anche l’80 metri Dragon di Columbus Yacht «rappresenta forse al meglio questo concetto.
Uno dei tratti distintivi come evoca il nome stesso è la flessibilità. Le impavesate poppiere dello scafo, quelle che proteggono il pozzetto per intenderci, sono completamente abbattibili e una volta alato il tender trasformano quest’area in una gigantesca lounge di 115 mq sul mare. Una superficie che può all’occorrenza perfino anche ospitare una grande piscina a scomparsa. In questo modo» continua Cutolo «il pozzetto diventa una naturale estensione della zona living. Una continuità dettata anche dall’assenza di quel gradino che di solito delimitava l’ingresso nel soggiorno interno sul main deck».
