Matthew Campbell Laurenza’s approach brings together design and art – and respect for tagua, which he works in such a way that it will become more beautiful as time passes.
They are eclectic, colorful, and fun creations made of rare materials; their structure, however, is based on solid architectural, sculptural, and artistic foundations. And they look to art, drawing influence from Modernism, Art Deco, and the Renaissance: historical periods and art movements which molded Matthew Campbell Laurenza’s taste and the strong identity of his brand, M.C.L. Matthew left Savannah College of Art, where was studying architecture and interior design, to pursue a degree in Fine Arts, specializing in sculpture, at Bellarmine College. «My vision has always been to create pieces that stand the test of time by virtue of the high quality of materials and the design, going against the trend of the urge to buy endless, faddy gadgets,» he says. «This involves a more sensitive use of resources, which may mean reusing old stones, metals, and mounts or introducing new, organic, sustainable materials, such as the tagua nut, which helps to defend the elephant and whose cultivation has very little impact on the environment.» It is a vision that goes from the short to the long term, like his jewels, created to be passed from generation to generation, in a symbolic dialogue between the artist and the people who, on each occasion, interpret his works. «I always try to create interaction. My greatest pleasure is to see how much my work is transformed in relation to the person who wears it.» And how it becomes, over time, even more beautiful and precious.
