Tenere i piedi in due scar pe è di solito il miglior modo per non decidere. Invece, per Francesco Meda, (34 anni) designer che dalle belle speranze è passato subito alle belle r ealizzazioni, è il modus operandi perfetto. «Ho iniziato a f are oggetti autoproducendoli», racconta, «il primo è “Bridge”, ponte luminoso di ottone tagliato a laser e poi cab lato con led (2014) e, facendo al contempo da assistente a mio padre, sono venuto in contatto con le dinamiche delle g randi aziende come Kartell, Molteni, Caimi e del design prodotto in larga scala. Mi piace frequentare mondi totalmente diversi. Si impara dalle due realtà: le logiche progettuali sono le stesse». È l’azienda di se stesso, Francesco. Felice di esserlo in uno studio, quello che appare in queste foto, diviso con un papà che non ha bisogno di presentazioni – Alberto Meda (74 anni), cinque Compassi d’oro, collaborazioni e docenze internazionali. «È uno dei pochi designer che ha sempre avuto uno studio da solo: siamo noi due, neanche una segretaria. È come una bottega, tutto molto f amiliare; c’è confronto, ma senza attr iti, né gelosie». Come accade in ogni bottega i saper i dell’uno diventano patrimonio dell’altro. «Io mi sento più legato a un mondo più estetico , a un mix di decorativo e grafico, ma la cultura di mio padr e da ingegnere, più tecnica, per me è fondamentale». Estetica e ingegneria, la domanda è automatica: che dice dei nuovi Levi’s Enginereed Jeans? «La novità non è solo for male: l’aspetto della r icerca tecnica siamper i jeans sia per la T-shirt è interessante perché la tecnologia 3D usata per realizzarli è una delle grandi innovazioni nella progettazione del design. Io stesso la uso non solo per cr eare prototipi, ma ho anche realizzato una collezione di g ioielli 3D». Il lancio dei Levi’s Enginereed Jeans avverrà al global event, il 9 gennaio al Tepidarium del Roster. a Firenze, ci verrà? «Assolutamente sì». Keeping a foot in two worlds is often the best w ay to av oid making a decision. However, for Francesco Meda, 34 – a designer who went str aight from great expectations to great creations –this is the best modus oper andi. “I started to make objects by producing them myself,” he says. “The first one called ‘Bridge’ is an illuminated br idge in laser-cut br ass that w as cabled with LED lighting. It is from 2014. At the same time , working as an assistant to m y father, I came in contact with big companies like Kar tell, Molteni, Caimi, and large-scale design. I like to frequent worlds that are completel y different. I lear ned from these two different worlds – the design logic is the same.” Francesco is his own compan y. And he’s happy that way, shar ing a studio (featured in these photos) with his father who needs no introduction—Alber to Meda, 74. He has won fiv e Compassi d’Oro aw ards and worked and taught internationally. “He was one of the few designers who alw ays had a studio alone . It is just the two of us , not ev en a secretar y. It’s like a workshop, very informal. We compare notes b ut with no conflict or jealousy.” Like in ev ery workshop, one person’s skills are passed down to the others . “I feel more tied to a world that is about aesthetics , a mix of gr aphics and decorative elements, but my father’s background is that of an engineer , he’s more tec hnical, but that is fundamental for me .” Aesthetics and engineering…that begs the question of what he thinks about the new Levi’s Engineered Jeans. “It is not just a for mal innovation. There’s the aspect of tec hnical researc h for both the jeans and the t-shir t, and this is interesting because the 3D technology used to create them is one of the biggest innov ations in design. I use it m yself to create prototypes, but I also made a collection of 3D jewels .” Levi’s Engineered Jeans will be launched during a global ev ent on J an. 9 at the Tepidarium del Roster in Florence. Will he be there? “Absolutely.”
