THE MANCHESTER DERBY IS ON

- BY CHRISTOPHER SAWYERS

TOMORROW, Saturday November 10 and Sunday November 11, there will be some tantalising and mouth-watering clashes across the top leagues in Europe.

Firstly, we jet over to Germany to witness the biggest game in German football when the in-form and rejuvenated Borussia Dortmund host the surprisingly stuttering Bayern Munich.

After that game, we hurry over to England to witness a monstrous Manchester derby as ‘the noisy neighbours’ Manchester City lay in wait for their eternal rivals Manchester United.

Although it’s still early in the season, this game on Saturday is enormous for both German sides as Borussia Dortmund welcome Bayern Munich to Signal Iduna Park.

Dortmund have had an outstanding start to the season and are currently four points clear of Munich at the top of the table.

There will be fireworks come Saturday as Dortmund are determined to wrest the title out of the hands of their more illustrious and bitter rivals and they brimming with confidence.

Marco Reus, who scored the winner for Dortmund last weekend, is back to his best and poses a huge threat for the opposition defenders as his knack for scoring in big games is sure to have them running scared.

On the other hand, Bayern Munich dropped two points at home last weekend when they were held to a 1-1 draw by Frieburg. Saturday’s result was the latest in a recent run of poor results for Munich and only serves as motivation for their rivals.

A thriller is expected as Bayern’s defence has been shaky this season and games between these sides have produced lots of goals as the last three games have had over 3.5 goals being scored.

Now we focus on our second match on Sunday at 11:30 local time. The Reds of Manchester United and the Blues of Manchester City will face off in the Manchester derby as old rivals Pep Guardiola and Jose Mourinho lock horns once more.

Is there really a Manchester mismatch presently? How big is the gulf between both teams now?

While Manchester United’s defence has been under scrutiny, the real gulf between them and Man City is in their attacking play.

City were in irrepressible form last week when thrashing Southampton 6-1 and, for sure, are fancying their chances against a United side that has kept only one clean sheet in the Premier League this season. The fact that City have scored 33 goals to United’s 19 speaks volume of the growing gap between the two teams.

However, Man United have done well recently, dropping just two points in their last four games including the draw at Chelsea. Mourinho’s United side can take heart from April’s Paul Pogba-inspired comeback at the Etihad Stadium, when recovering from 0-2 down at the break to triumph 3-2.

City’s Jamaican ‘wonder kid’ Raheem Sterling has been in sparklingly form of late, while United’s Anthony Martial has maintained his hot scoring streak. So, expect ‘fireworks’ at the Etihad on Sunday as the attacking power of City takes aim at the leaking defence of United that has shipped 18 goals so far this season. Who will be the kings of Manchester, City or United?

The betting tip? Both teams to score over 2.5 goals in the game.
