Internet Safety Pep Talk with Digicel

-

To kick off a week-long celebration in the lead-up to Safer Internet Day, Digicel hosted over 500 students from 10 primary, secondary, and tertiary schools during a series of 20minute virtual pep talks on internet safety.

The events were co-hosted by the Cybercrime Unit of the Jamaica Constabulary Force and dancehall artiste, Ce’cile.

Brimming with deep interest, and, at times, excitement, students flicked their cameras on and put their virtual hands up to participate in the lively and educational discussions. Priory Primary & Infant, St Ann – This smart bunch of up to 100 students joined this interactive session, talked about the apps they love to use, as well as the dos and don’ts while using them.

We’re confident that they won’t be fooled by ‘click baits’ with phony rewards that are really just malware waiting to happen.

No phishing around our friends at Priory

Primary & Infant! Southborough Primary, St Catherine - With school uniform and virtual thinking caps on, these Grade Six students brought their ‘A game’ to the chat about cyberbullying. Their commitment: not to post or share hate speech, harmful language, or mean things about someone else.

Way to go Southborough - the future of the internet is in good hands! Buff Bay High, Portland – We were touched by one student’s personal experience of being targeted by an online predator.

Reporting the user to the site and blocking the user were a few of the solutions our cyberexperts shared. Other students commented, “block dem”, and “tell your parents”.

Great going Buff Bay High! Block, delete and keep it moving! With virtual school chats out of the way, we turned our attention to a partnership with the National Secondary Student Council (NSSC) for the “Safer Internet

Collage” competition. Students are asked to create a unique collage that promotes one safer internet tip and submit it to nsscja@ gmail.com to enter.

The collage will then be posted on @nssc_ja Instagram page for students to vote for their favorite by liking the post. T

he collage with the most “likes” wins a brand new laptop. Second and third place get a Samsung tablet and DL3 Pro Plus smartphone, respectively.

Look out for the winners to be announced on February 14, 2021, on Instagram @nssc_ja and @ Digiceljamaica. As a digital operator, every day is an opportunity to make the internet a safer place for everyone – especially our young ones. That’s why we’re counting on you to play it safe online.
