Message From the Chairman, Professor Gordon Shirley
On the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the Caribbean Maritime University, I extend heartiest congratulations on behalf of the University Council to the architects and dreamers who gave birth to the institution destined to be a beacon of excellence for maritime education and training in the Caribbean. We also congratulate the builders and developers who have managed the transformation for the small maritime training institute through various stages into a University with high aspirations.
From its founding in 1980 through an alliance with the Government of Norway, the graduates of the institution have been the bedrock in the growth of the maritime sector in the region.
As the institution has grown, our graduates, trained in an array of maritime specializations, have excelled in various positions in leading maritime and shipping organizations across the globe.
Our curriculum has continued to evolve in response to the changing needs of the global maritime industry.
In this our 40th year, the institution has had to respond to the challenges of a pandemic and to simultaneously address the development pains of transitioning into a University.
With hallmark resilience, our technical team, instructors, and administrative staff have worked together to adjust our educational approaches in response to the public health challenge and to ensure that teaching and learning can continue.
The graduation of our 40th class of resourceful graduates is a validation of the tremendous effort to respond to the COVID-19 pandemic.
As we continue to address the challenges associated with the transition to University status, we are confident that we will successfully overcome the current obstacles and emerge as an even more excellent leader in maritime education in this hemisphere and beyond. Our plans are sound, and we have great confidence in the future.
We extend our best wishes to all members of the CMU Community including the students, alumni, faculty, staff, and executives. Continue to evolve, grow, and triumph in the years ahead!
