-

Massy United Insurance and the University of the West Indies (UWI) recently hosted a ceremony to honour the first two (2) recipients of the newly established Massy United Insurance (MUI) Actuarial Science Scholarships, at the Mona Campus.

The event was addressed by the Honourable Fayval Williams, Minister of Education, Youth and Information; Professor Dale Webber, Pro Vicechancellor and Principal of the UWI Mona Campus, Jonathan Archie, Acting Campus Registrar along with Winsome Gibbs, Branch Manager Massy United Insurance Jamaica, among others.

The Honourable Minister, Fayval Williams in her remarks to those gathered indicated that the support of entities like Massy United Insurance was very welcome, knowing how daunting having to pay for tertiary education can be. She lauded the recipients for their choice of subject for study, given the expanding scope of Actuarial Science outside the traditional areas. The Honourable Minister also encouraged the awardees to appreciate the opportunity they have been given and to continue to excel in their studies.

Professor Dale Webber expressed appreciation to Massy United for supporting the University’s ‘Triple A’ strategy, providing enhanced access to the students in realising their full potential as well as helping the students align their dreams and studies for the benefit of the country and the region.

“We recognise that as a socially responsible corporate citizen, the most valuable investment that we can make is in the development of our next generation of leaders. At this juncture, where parents are finding it extremely difficult to fund their children’s education, the team at Massy United felt that it was important to play our part. We want to ensure that students who have attained the academic standard required, would not have to defer their education based on financial obligations”, said Winsome Gibbs, Branch Manager of Massy United Jamaica. Addressing the scholarship recipients, she encouraged them to ensure that as they continued their studies, they keep challenging themselves to discover their capabilities and be astounding.

The Massy United Insurance scholarships were launched for the 2020-2021 academic year and carry a combined value $1.4 million Jamaican Dollars with a tenure of two years. After a rigorous selection process by the Office of Student Financing supported by the Department of Mathematics of the UWI, the awards were bestowed on students Antonique Aris and Mark Brown. Aris and Brown received their awards in front of a small gathering which included their relatives, officials from the Ministry of Education, the UWI and Massy United Insurance.
