UV Sterilization Another Method to Fight COVID?

-

According to the US Centres for Disease Control (CDC), the risk of contracting the virus due to airborne transmission is greater in an enclosed space with inadequate ventilation.

In Jamaica, many office buildings use air conditioning (AC) units to regulate the temperature and provide a cool environment for employees and customers.

Can the aerosol transmission of COVID-19 be minimized in the enclosed airconditioned environment of a workplace or medical facility?

UVC, a band of ultraviolet radiation has been known for many decades to have germicidal, fungicidal and viricidal properties.

Even before the onset of the current pandemic UVC lamps were in use in medical facilities to help sterilize rooms, operating theaters, and procedure rooms.

With the outbreak of the pandemic, UVC irradiation has been more extensively used with the technology being employed to aid in the sterilization of buses, trains, meeting rooms and hospital rooms.

Recently, UVC sanitizers for AC units have been introduced to help reduce possible viral loads in the air circulating in offices and buildings. Daniel de Robles et al at the Creative Construction Conference in 2017 presented evidence that Ultraviolet germicidal irradiation (UVGI) deployed in the AC systems of office buildings results in a 75% reduction of illness causing microbes.

Recent scientific studies also acknowledge the effectiveness of UVC light against coronaviruses.

Installation must be by trained technicians as direct exposure to UVC can cause skin and eye irritation. For more information on contact Bemac Distributors Limited at 876-631-6799/ Whatsapp 876-579-9248.
