- By H.E. TIAN Qi, Ambassador of China to Jamaica

This year marks the the centenary of the founding of the Communist Party of China(cpc). Through unremitting efforts over the past 100 years, the CPC has made remarkable achievements, leading the Chinese people in achieving a historic transformation from standing up to growing rich, and has made historic contributions to the country, the people, the nation, and the world.

Explore a development path that suits China’s national conditions and point out the right direction for the rejuvenation of Chinese nation

From the outbreak of the Opium War in 1840, China was gradually reduced to a semi-colonial, semi-feudal society, bullied and enslaved by the Western powers and suffering the notorious behaviors of national betrayal and humiliation by feudal rulers. For more than 100 years, almost every imperialist country in the world invaded China, forcing it to pay indemnities, cede territory, open treaty ports and grant privileges to foreigners.

In the process of the Chinese people’s antiimperialist and anti-feudal revolution, along with the integration of Marxism-leninism with the Chinese worker’s movement, the CPC was born on July 1, 1921.

After the founding of the CPC, it rallied and led the Chinese people to defeat Japanese imperialist aggressors, overthrow the Kuomintang reactionary rule, complete the new democratic revolution, and eventually establish the People’s Republic of China after 28 years of bloody struggle. The founding of the People’s Republic of China completely ended the history of the old China as a semi-colonial and semi-feudal society, which marks a milestone that China has achieved national independence and liberation and the Chinese people have since stood up as the masters of their destiny. Since the CPC took power as the governing party of China, the Chinese nation has ushered in a new epoch of development.

In the initial stage after the founding of the People’s Republic of China, facing with extremely difficult and complicated situations both at home and abroad like its sluggish national economy and the political isolation, economic blockade and military threats from western countries led by the United States, the CPC made active efforts to find a path of socialism suited to its own conditions. With the completion of socialist transformation, it established the basic socialist systems and scored remarkable achievements in the socialist drive. Starting from scratch, it managed to create an independent and rather complete industrial system and national economic system, and achieve the zero breakthrough in cutting-edge technology such as nuclear technology, artificial satellites and rocket launchers.

The Third Plenary Session of the 11th CPC Central Committee held in December 1978 made a historic decision to shift the focus of the work of the Party and the country to seeking economic development through the reform and openingup initiative, which has greatly liberated and developed the social productive forces. China has taken immense strides to catch up with the trend of the times, completing in a few decades the industrialisation that the developed countries had undertaken for hundreds of years, establishing the most complete modern industrial system in the world and becoming the world’s second largest economy and largest exporter, joining the ranks of middle-income countries.

Since the 18th CPC National Congress held in November 2012, the CPC Central Committee, with Comrade Xi Jinping at its core, has led the Party and people of all ethnic groups in advancing the cause of socialism with Chinese characteristics on all fronts. With historic achievements and transformation, socialism with Chinese characteristics enters a new era. As the second largest economy, the largest industrial country, the largest trader in goods, and the largest holder of foreign exchange reserves in the world, China contributes approximately 30% to the growth of the world economy.
