WHO IS A CHARTERED ACCOUNTANT?
A Chartered Accountant is a person who is a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Jamaica (ICAJ) which is the body authorized under the Public Accountancy Act (PAB) to approve persons to be Chartered Accountants in Jamaica.
• Chartered Accountants are entitled to use the designation, CA, and subsequently, FCA.
• They are by training and experience qualified to provide services in the areas of Accounting, Auditing, Taxation, Finance and various aspects of business management.
• Chartered Accountants are trained and qualified to provide the highest level of Audit, Accounting and Financial Management services to the modern business world. They may also be sole practitioners or in partnership in firms (public practice), offering professional services to a wide range of clients.
• Alternatively, Chartered Accountants may occupy positions in industry, commerce or the public sector. For those whose interests and skills are suited to teaching and research, there are many opportunities available for providing Accountancy training.
How to become a Chartered Accountant:
• Must be over the age of 21
• Be of good moral character
o Be recommended by 2 ICAJ members in good standing
o Fulfill a minimum of 3 years practical experience with demonstrated competence in certain key areas (such as Auditing, Preparation of Financial Statements etc.)
• Pass any of the following qualifying exams – UWI MSC. (Accounting)/acca / AICPA / CPA Canada
