WHO IS A CHARTERED ACCOUNTANT?

A Chartered Accountant is a person who is a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountant­s of Jamaica (ICAJ) which is the body authorized under the Public Accountanc­y Act (PAB) to approve persons to be Chartered Accountant­s in Jamaica.

• Chartered Accountant­s are entitled to use the designatio­n, CA, and subsequent­ly, FCA.

• They are by training and experience qualified to provide services in the areas of Accounting, Auditing, Taxation, Finance and various aspects of business management.

• Chartered Accountant­s are trained and qualified to provide the highest level of Audit, Accounting and Financial Management services to the modern business world. They may also be sole practition­ers or in partnershi­p in firms (public practice), offering profession­al services to a wide range of clients.

• Alternativ­ely, Chartered Accountant­s may occupy positions in industry, commerce or the public sector. For those whose interests and skills are suited to teaching and research, there are many opportunit­ies available for providing Accountanc­y training.

How to become a Chartered Accountant:

• Must be over the age of 21

• Be of good moral character

o Be recommende­d by 2 ICAJ members in good standing

o Fulfill a minimum of 3 years practical experience with demonstrat­ed competence in certain key areas (such as Auditing, Preparatio­n of Financial Statements etc.)

• Pass any of the following qualifying exams – UWI MSC. (Accounting)/acca / AICPA / CPA Canada
