OVER 1,500 athletes from 63 of the top boys’ and girls’ high schools are down to compete at today’s staging of the Mckenley/wint Track and Field Classic, which will be held at the Calabar High School in St Andrew.

Kingston College, Jamaica College, Calabar, Excelsior, Munro College, St Jago, Wolmer’s Girls’, and St Catherine are among the top boys schools that are down to compete at the meet.

Hydel, Holmwood, St Jago, Immaculate, Wolmer’s Girls’, St Andrew Petersfield, and St Catherine are some of the prominent girls’ schools that are scheduled to participate at the championship.

The girls’ section is scheduled to run off at 8:30 am, while the boys section is slated to begin at 12:00 pm David Miller, one of the organisers of the meet, said they are looking forward to a very entertaining and exciting championship.

“We will have strong competition among high school student athletes. We will have girls competing and then another session for boys to compete over a series of events primarily through the hurdles,” said Miller.

“All the hurdles’ events that will be competed for at Champs will be at this meet and we will also have a sprint session comprising 100-m and 400-m events.

“We will also have strong competition in the field, primarily in the long jump and in the throws. This is a track meet where we will have the discus, the shot put, and the javelin for both boys and girls competing separately,” he added.

He shared that the meet is a qualifying event for this year’s Inter-secondary Schools Sports Association (ISSA)/ Gracekennedy Boys’ and Girls’ Athletics Championships, which will be held over five days at the National Stadium from March 28 to April 1.

“This is a qualifying for Champs because it is sanctioned by the JAAA [Jamaica Athletics Administrative Association]. It is approved by ISSA and so we expect that we will have strong competition in all areas,” Miller said.

“The officials that will be there are qualified officials and so every mark that is made in the long pit or in the throws are recorded in accordance with the highest standard, and every time that is run on the track will be recorded as the qualifying time for Champs,” he ended.
