PAJ commends the JCA for providing world-class services at Jamaica’s Ports
The Port Authority of Jamaica (Authority/paj) joins the Jamaica Customs Agency (JCA) in celebration of International Customs
Day. The PAJ recognises and commends the JCA for their steadfast commitment to providing world class services at all of Jamaica’s ports of entry.
The last few years have proven, more than ever, that knowledge-sharing and partnerships are key components for organisations to remain viable. In this regard, the Authority looks forward to maintaining a positive working relationship with the JCA. The collaborative efforts between our agencies are essential for the continued sustainability of Jamaica’s port operations.
The cargo industry remains dynamic, and susceptible to shocks. As supply chain and congestion issues consistently improve, it is important that we continue to implement innovative strategies that facilitate the uninterrupted flow of cargo.
The PAJ and the JCA have employed a strategic approach driven by digitisation which includes greater utilisation of technology enabled processes. The PAJ has established the Port Community System (PCS) which facilitates the direct submission of manifests to JCA’S ASYCUDA World.
These electronic platforms share critical information within the shipping community. This has simplified the process across the supply chain and allow airlines, freight forwarders, shippers, and border protection agencies to communicate effectively and more efficiently. Additionally, the PCS Truck Appointment System continues to address the scheduling and congestions issues in Kingston by enabling the terminals to optimize the planning of container movements.
At the Port of Montego Bay, the finalisation of the contactless clearance process is expected to greatly reduce wait times for importers during the year. This project was executed through partnership with Port Handlers Limited and the JCA.
In 2022, there were major investments undertaken by the public wharves locally. These investments targeted equipment acquisition and terminal expansion. Considering the possibility of higher volumes being processed at these ports, these investments in technology by the PAJ and JCA have placed them in a stronger position to improve efficiency, facilitate the regular flow of cargo through our ports and strengthen border security. The cruise industry is a key business segment for the Authority. As cruise activities return to its PRE-COVID levels, we continue to coordinate with government bodies, inclusive of the JCA, to allow the seamless processing of passengers. This achievement has positively impacted the overall passenger experience, and we continue to partner with key stakeholders to ensure Jamaica remains the World’s Leading Cruise Destination.
The Authority remains committed to supporting the Jamaica Customs Agency, as both entities work towards achieving their respective mandates and contribute to the growth of Jamaica’s economy.
