Nugent breaks University of Arkansas record
JAMAICA’S Ackera Nugent set a new University of Arkansas record for the women’s 60m hurdles after she ran a personal best 7.88 seconds to win the event during the Razorback Invitational at the school’s track last weekend.
Nugent, whose time ranks her fourth in the world, broke the school record of 7.93 set by Payton Chadwick in 2018 and also dipped under her previous best of 7.89 set last year.
Another Jamaican, Daszay Freeman, also of Arkansas, was fourth in the event in a season’s best 8.21 seconds.
Five other Jamaicans, including Commonwealth Games gold medallist Lamara Distin, were also winners on the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) circuit over the weekend.
Distin, the national record holder, opened her indoor season winning the women’s high jump event with a college leading mark of 1.90m at the Razorback Invitational on Friday.
The Texas A&M University senior, who holds the Jamaican national indoor record of 1.92m, had one failure in her series on her first attempt at 1.90m before retiring.
Former Petersfield High and Jamaica junior representative Shaquena Foote won the women’s 400m at the University of Washington Invite. She clocked 53.78, her first time competing indoors.
The time was the third best ever for a San Diego State University athlete.
Tarees Rhoden won the men’s 800m at the Bob Pollack meet at Clemson University, running 1:48.51 minutes, with former Spot Valley High runner Tyreese Reid of Mississippi State University placing third in 1:49.01.
Safin Wills of Purdue won the men’s long jump at the Lenny Lyles Invitational at the University of Louisville with 7.44m, while Romaine Beckford Of the University of South Florida set a new meet record 2.18m in the men’s high jump.
Former Herbert Morrison Technical athlete Daniella Anglin of South Dakota cleared 1.84m to set a new meet record in the women’s high jump at the Jack Johnson Classic,
At the Arkansas meet Phillip Lemonious ran a season’s best 7.73 for third in the men’s 60m hurdles.
In the men’s 400m, Wayne Lawrence of the University of Kentucky was fifth in 46.48, while Demar Francis of Baylor University ran a personal best 46.61 for seventh.
Nickisha Pryce of Arkansas was fifth in the women’s 400m in a new lifetime best of 51.97.
Jeremy Bembridge of South Plains College was second in the men’s 400m at the Texas Tech Open, running 46.84; Antonio Hanson of Ohio State was seventh in 47.59; Edvaldo Whitehorne of South Plains ran 48.32; and Gregory Prince also of South Plains clocked 48.54.
Kimar Farquharson, another athlete from South Plains, was third in the men’s 800m in 1:48.90.
At the Bob Pollack meet at Clemson, Liberty University’s Warren Barrett lost a shot put contest for the first time this season, finishing second with 18.73m. He was followed by teammate Kevin Nedrick with 18.72m, and Courtney Lawrence of Kennesaw State third with 18.43m.
During the meet at the University of Louisville, Nia Robinson and Annia Ashley, both of South Florida, picked up second-place finsihes.
Robinson set a personal best 6.42m in the women’s long jump and was third in the high jump with 1.70m behind Ashley’s 1.75m clearance.
Former Kingston College runner Shevioe Reid, also of South Florida, was fifth in the men’s 400m in 47.77.
Former Mount Alvernia High jumper Roschell Clayton of the University of Villanova was second in the women’s high jump at the Penn State National with 1.71m. Abigail Mullings of West Virginia was sixth with 1.63m
During the Jack Johnson meet, Annalee Robinson of South Dakota was second in the women’s 400m in 57.15 and Mark Daley was second in the men’s 200m in 22.14.
