LOCATING LANDFORMS

Examine the map below: what do you notice?

-

• There are different colours on the map.

• Most of the inner area is coloured in yellow and brown.

• What can you conclude about Jamaica’s physical feature based on the diagram?

• This type of map is known as a relief map or a physical map. The relief of Jamaica is described as mountainous. These highlands spread from the eastern end of the island, running through the centre to the western section. It is said that the central chains of the mountains form a backbone through the middle of the island. The mountain system may be placed into three sections:

1) The eastern section, which is made up of the Blue Mountains and the John Crow Mountains. Can you identify that area on the map above?

2) The central section/region, formed chiefly of limestone, extending from Stony Hill to the Cockpit country.

3) The western section with Dolphin Head Mountain as its centre. Landform map shows the locations of landforms in a place. These maps often use colour to show mountains, hills, plateaus, plains, and more. They also show major bodies of water.

Do you know the landform represented by each of the following colours: brown, yellow, green?
