Legato tackles ‘sciance’, scamming in new track

WITH the topic of obeah and violence becoming prevalent in many dancehall songs, emerging deejay Legato is urging other entertainers to be mindful of what they preach.

“Be careful of the message you’re sending out there.

The younger ears are listening. Our music is not about scamming and killing people. Don’t chop out the root; the fruit is the knowledge… ah reggae put Jamaica pon top,” he told the Jamaica Observer.

The artiste, whose real name is Robert Annakie, released the track Cancel Dem Siance earlier this month. It was produced by Fada Bravo and Jagga Records.

“The song is about unity and about teaching the youths the right thing. People tend to glorify the wrong things; we grew up in the church so we not on any voodoo business, we know right from wrong. This whole chopping business, to me, is a form of robbery, so you won’t hear me singing about chopping any line. I feel like at least one good apple must be on the tree, so I am telling my truth,” Legato said.

The track has been very well received locally and on the international market and Legato believes his positive message and authentic approach is why people are gravitating towards his music.

“The music now that has been released is not what the world knows our music to be and that is why our music is declining. Artistes need to be putting out more music that has longevity and encourages positive behaviour. Whether we want to believe it or not, we have a duty to the youths as artistes.”

On his musical journey for just about nine years now, Legato plans on continuing along this road and on impacting lives through his music.

Some of his previous releases include Pride, Caah

Believe, and Powerful.
