Three big guns take aim at Seeking My Dream Trophy

THE $1.29-million Seeking My Dream Trophy feature race at Caymanas Park today features reigning champion stayer Calculus, the much-improved Runaway Algo, and the revitalised Blue Vinyl in what is likely to be an intense clash for top honours over seven-and-a-half furlongs (1,500m).

Calculus, trained by Gary Subratie, has raced twice this season, winning once and finishing second once. Runaway Algo, trained by Dale Murphy, has one victory and a second-place finish from two races this season, while Blue Vinyl, trained by Patrick “Wacky” Lynch, is unbeaten from two starts.

The big three have only met once in their careers, in the ultra-rich Mouttet Mile (invitational) event on December 3, 2022. Calculus finished fifth in the one-mile (1,600m) race by just over two lengths, followed by Blue Vinyl in eighth place by more than five lengths, and Runaway Algo in 14th place by 17 lengths.

Today’s clash, however, is a different story, as all three runners have showed significant development since the Mouttet Mile, making their clash a must-see.

The race is essentially restricted to these three runners since no other runner in the six-horse field has the skill or talent to pull off an upset here. They are simply interested in making up numbers.

The Seeking My Dream Trophy, a three-year-old and upwards contest honouring the former Derby and two Diamond Mile winner, is positioned as the eighth race on the 10-race card with a post time of 4:00 pm. First race is at 11:45 am.

Calculus (Sensational Slam – Trinket Box) was just a length and three-quarters behind I Am Fred in the The Viceroy Trophy over one mile (1,600m) on April 22 after making strong headway in the deep stretch. Although he would prefer it longer than today’s distance, the fiveyear-old bay horse should go well over the trip and could get up in time when it matters most.

The former Jamaica Derby and St Leger winner, however, gives away a lot of weight to his rivals, which is a strong deterrent factor.

Calculus will carry 57.0kgs (126 lb) with Bebeto Harvey in the saddle.

Runaway Algo is a very consistent and talented American-bred runner who was beaten into second place by I Am Fred in the Saint Cecelia Cup over six-and-ahalf furlongs (1,300m) on April 8. However, Runaway Algo was an easy 12-length winner of the “Lindy” Delapenha Memorial Trophy over a mile on February 26. Bred by Algorithms – Misunify, Runaway Algo should report for this assignment in tip-top shape and is expected to fight to the end. Under the capable hands of Linton Steadman, Runaway Algo will carry 54.0kgs (119 lb).

Bred by Bern Identity – Blufield, Blue comes into this race after a 12 ½ length win in the Jamaica Veterinary Board World Vet Day Trophy over one mile on April 29. Blue Vinyl has shown tremendous improvement this season, and so another good run is expected from him. Win number three on the trot could well be on the cards for the four-year-old chestnut colt here. Javaniel Patterson will again be in the saddle at 51.0kgs (112 lb).

The rest of the field is made up of Unruly Boss, Money Monster, and Sistren Treasure.
