Are we paying for non-performance?
Dear Editor,
As the country heads into another local government election we have to ask the very pertinent question: Is local government working for us?
From my perspective and experience, the answer is a resounding, no! We have seen the deterioration in how councillors and municipal corporations carry out their roles and functions. The theory of who gets what, when and where, is a tailwind that drives a wedge between good and bad governance in all of our 14 municipalities.
As a former local government legislator who retired undefeated and served across different political administrations, I think, and rightfully so, that this present Andrew Holness Administration is one of if not the poorest custodian of good governance in local authorities and the conduct of councillors.
How can a Government grant an increase of over 250 per cent to councillors, most of whom have barely matriculated from primary school. The last time I checked, most of the 228 councillors in the last local government term did not possess even one Caribbean Examinations Council subject, yet they are pulling down a salary in excess of $400,000 per month. It does not send a good signal to the workers within and outside of the municipalities.
What makes matters worse is the fact that these councillors are abysmal failures who lack the vision to improve the quality of life of the people they serve. Most of these 228 councillors are now seeking re-election against the backdrop of their non-performance.
My only hope is that the voters will turn out at the polls and elect councillors in whom they have trust.
