Get these for your home gym

- SUZANNE HILL

EXERCISING at home is probably the best option for the busy professional, or that person who just can’t find the time for the gym, or hate the communal setting. And when you’re thinking of exercising at home you have to think about equipment, if you’re even a little bit serious about your fitness journey.

Personal trainer Lennox Richards said you can start small — with just dumb-bells, weights and a skipping rope. He said what’s important is that you start, then you can look to getting more equipment.

“The best equipment for a home gym depends on your fitness goals, preferences, and available space,” he said.

Here are versatile and commonly recommended pieces of equipment he says almost everyone will acquire.

Dumb-bells or kettle bells: Ideal for strength training exercises, offering a variety of weight options for different muscle groups.

Resistance bands: Compact and versatile, these are great for strength training, stretching, and mobility exercises.

Exercise mat: Essential for floor exercises, yoga, or Pilates, providing a comfortable and non-slip surface.

Adjustable bench: Enables a variety of exercises, including strength training and bodyweight exercises.

Jump rope: Excellent for cardio workouts, helping to improve coordination and burn calories.

Pull-up bar: Installs in a doorway for upper body strength training, especially targeting the back, shoulders, and arms.

Stability ball: Enhances core strength, stability, and flexibility through various exercises.

Medicine ball: Versatile for strength and conditioning exercises, adding resistance to functional movements.

Treadmill or stationary bike: For cardiovascular workouts when outdoor options are limited.

Rowing machine: Provides a full-body workout, targeting muscles in the arms, legs, and core.

“Remember to consider your available space, budget, and specific goals when selecting equipment,” Richards said. “Additionally, bodyweight exercises like squats and push-ups can be highly effective and require minimal or no equipment. Tailor your home gym to your needs to create a set-up that motivates you to stay active.”
