Headley Cup cricket second round begins
THE second round of the Inter-secondary Schools Sports Association (ISSA)/GRACE Headley Cup schoolboy cricket competition begins today with four games across two groups.
In Group 1, Cornwall College will face Dinthill Technical at Cornwall College, while Garvey Maceo High host Clarendon College.
In Group 2, Tacky High School host Ocho Rios High, while Munro hosts Manchester High.
Defending champions St Elizabeth Technical High School (STETHS), unbeaten so far this season, head Group 1. They are alongside Cornwall College, Clarendon College, Dinthill Technical High, and Garvey Maceo High.
Last year’s beaten finalists May Day High are in Group 2, alongside Tacky High, Manchester High, Ocho Rios High, and Munro College, in what may well be the ‘group of death’.
The first round of the Headley Cup ended mid to late last week with mostly lopsided results.
At Garvey Maceo High on Wednesday, February 21, the home team beat Denbigh High by nine wickets, with Denbigh, 45 all out and Garvey Maceo, 49 for one wicket. Dontay Dillion took six wickets for 16 runs for Garvey Maceo.
At Swift River Sports Complex Tacius Golding High failed to show for their game against Titchfield High.
At Windalco Sports Club Tacky High School beat Dinthill Technical by 308 runs.
Jevere Green, with 215 not out, and Tyson Gordon, 104 not out, carried Tacky High to 336 without loss, declared.
Jordan Pinnock followed up with seven wickets for four runs as Dinthill could only manage 28 all out.
At Ocho Rios High, the home team beat Brown’s Town High by 13 runs. Ocho Rios made 56 all out, with Devonte Jones taking four wickets for 17.
Ocho Rios pace bowlers, Rushawn Lynch (4-26) and Reando Kelly (3-11), led the way as Brown’s Town High were dismissed for 43.
At Cambridge High, York Castle High beat Cambridge by 126 runs. Marco-dean Clarke stroked 102 as York Castle made 223 all out against three wickets each for Akeem Clarke and Nathan Grizzle.
Cambridge made 97 all out, with Donovan Ferguson (4-15) and Marco-dean Clarke (3-31) doing the most damage for York Castle.
At Ultimate Sports Club on Friday, February 23, Ocho Rios High beat Cambridge High by 83 runs. Ocho Rios High made 116 all out with Conroy Mitchell scoring 40 against Kavian Richards (4-17).
Cambridge replied with 33 all out as pacers Kelly (8-16) and Rushawn Lynch (2-8) shared the wickets.
At JBI Mining Company, Brown’s Town High beat Ferncourt High by 41 runs. Brown’s Town scored 97 all out and dismissed Ferncourt High for 56.
At Cornwall College, the home team beat York Castle High by 103 runs. Cornwall made 190 all out as Shaya Samuels and Amani Ainsley made 39 each against York Castle’s Jaquan Brown with 6-37.
York Castle were bowled out for 87. Donovan Ferguson topscored with 43 against Damien Daley four wickets for eight runs and Ainsley three for 15.
At Claude Mckay High there were no umpires for the game against Vere Technical High.
At Sir P Oval, Leonardo Barrett led the way with a double century as Clarendon College beat Denbigh High by 427 runs. Clarendon made 495 for four declared as Barrett, with 205 not out, Jovenne Palmer (99) and Kavel Bailey (51) making most runs.
Denbigh High made 68 all out against Palmer (3-10) and Jason Campbell (3-18).
At May Day High, the home team drew with Garvey Maceo High.
Led by an unbeaten 125 from West Indies Under-19 all-rounder Reon Edwards and 123 from Javed Williams, May Day piled up 416 for six declared.
Garvey Maceo reached 120 for six, with Edwards taking four wickets for 37 when stumps were drawn.
At Port Esquivel on Saturday, February 24, Old Harbour High beat Port Antonio High by four wickets. Port Antonio High were dismissed for 56. Old Harbour High reached 57 for six.
At Swift River Sports Complex, Dinthill Technical beat Titchfield High by two wickets. Titchfield scored 54 all out and Dinthill replied with 56 for eight wickets.
At Content Gardens, Tacky beat Charlemont High by nine wickets. Charlemont scored 56 all out and Tacky High responded with 58 for one.
