Enough is enough!

Dear Editor,

Jamaica is drowning in the blood of innocent babies killed in the wombs of Jamaican women.

The Caribbean Policy Research Institute claims that 22,000 abortions are performed in Jamaica each year. These are believed to be liberal estimates, with more conservative estimates presented by Dr Charles Royes in Parliament in 2019, reaching 10,000 abortions per year. Whatever the actual figure, we know we are in a horrific crisis.

To put it in perspective, according to the Statistical Institute of Jamaica, 31,276 babies were born in 2022 in Jamaica. This means that for every three babies born, one or two are killed in the womb in Jamaica. Horrendous!

It is no wonder that citizens have embarked on this pioneering move, the first of its kind in the Caribbean, fasting and praying for the end of abortion at a strategic location. We are intercepting women who have been deceived into believing that abortion is the solution to the crisis they currently face. We offer a better solution. Those alarmed about the changing demographics of Jamaican society need not look much farther than the flourishing billion-dollar abortion industry, which has never been challenged in this way. Enough is enough!

Vision 2030 is firstly for Jamaica to be “the place to live”. It is a call on every Jamaican to no longer turn a blind eye to our unborn Jamaicans being led to slaughter but rather to find innovative and sustainable ways to make abortion unthinkable, turning our culture from death to life and helping to meet the needs of women in crisis pregnancies.

It is appalling to think that everyone knows where abortions are taking place in this country and that it has taken so many decades before any on the ground, organised, and sustained intervention, small as it may be. As Jamaicans we have all pledged, stating boldly, “I promise to stand up for justice...” The perpetuation of the killing of innocent unborn children on our watch in this country is an affront to justice and an insult to the vision and destiny of Jamaica.

Our duty to the weakest among us starts with the child in the womb. Let us do all we can to protect women and babies from abortion. Enough is enough!
