Standing on a record of accountability

-

Dear Editor,

I am writing in response to the recent article entitled ‘Ugly political record’ by Erica Virtue, published on March 17 in The Sunday Gleaner, which, in my view, painted a twisted and inaccurate picture of accountability under Prime Minister Andrew Holness’s Administration.

Contrary to the narrative presented in the article, I believe it is essential to recognise and applaud the strides made towards accountability under the leadership of Prime Minister Holness.

Unlike administrations before 2016, Prime Minister Holness’s tenure has been marked by approximately seven high-profile resignations or dismissals. This demonstrates a commitment to accountability and integrity in public service, which is a crucial aspect of good governance. It is evident that under Prime Minister Holness’s Administration, Jamaica has realised that accountability is not optional — it is essential for effective governance and public trust.

The quotes mentioned in the article, attributed to political scientist Paul Bourne, labelling these resignations as part of an “ugly political record”, seem to lack thought and factual basis. Such statements, while attempting to influence public opinion, fail to acknowledge the positive impact of holding public officials accountable for their actions. Instead of dismissing these resignations as negative, they should be celebrated as a sign of progress towards a more transparent and accountable government.

Prime Minister Holness’s legacy will undoubtedly include public service accountability alongside prudent fiscal management, social enhancement, and record economic growth. It is disappointing to see attempts to discredit these achievements, especially when they are so clearly beneficial for Jamaica’s future.

It is important to recognise and appreciate the efforts of Prime Minister Holness’s Administration in promoting accountability in public service. Rather than focusing on the negative aspects, let us celebrate the strides made towards a more transparent and accountable government for the people of Jamaica.
