Don’t hate your blackness

THE EDITOR, Sir: WE SHOULD all show our love, respect and appreciation for Black History Month. And special attention and remembrance should be given to our forefathers, founders, and to all those who have fought the good fight in the black administration. We should also focus on the marvellous purpose and achievement that accompanied this special month.

During Black History Month, there should be perfect love and unity among our black brothers and sisters, and no one should try to get at each other’s throat.

There should be no skin bleaching. There should be no form of discrimination or colour prejudice among our people. Those who are worried or preoccupied about their God-given skin colour should become colour blind.

We should all learn something from, or about, Black History Month because there are historical lessons pertaining to its foundation, and valid reasons for its launch, that we ought to know.

Any man or woman, boy or girl who is dissatisfied about his/her dark skin colour should have a serious talk with their Creator.

We, black people, must love and appreciate ourselves, and give thanks to God for creating us in His likeness and image.

Finally, I am asking all those who hate themselves because they are black to listen to the old song of the late Nina Simone titled Young, Gifted and Black, and take it seriously. And begin to love yourselves, even if nobody tells you that they love you. DONALD J. MCKOY. donaldmckoy2010@hotmail.com
