Continue to build on the past

-

IN AN article written in the North Coast Times in December 1997, a young Marymount student recounts that on a warm, stuffy night while doing her homework, she felt drowsy and went outside for a walk in the cool, fresh air. She felt compelled to walk through the bushes where her foot “hit on something hard”. She was amazed that the object which hit her foot was “a little, metal computerised machine which was heavy, and on it were buttons, one saying ‘past’ and the other ‘future’. She pondered the advantage of pushing the ‘past’ button in light of the stories told by her grandmother of a time when all was peaceful and non-violent. On the other hand, she was curious as to what the future has in store, and how people would live in the future, so she could decide the kind of society in which she wanted her children to grow up. So she made a choice and pressed the ‘future’ button.

RICH HERITAGE OF THE PAST

Marymount, as you celebrate your 80th anniversary, you continue to build and ground your present on the rich heritage of the past, even as you continue into the future keeping alive the school’s motto, EtVirtuteet Veritate – ‘In Goodness and in Truth’.

In the year 1933, the Franciscan Sisters of Allegany responded to the call to hold a vocation school in Highgate. By 1934, there were four sisters residing in Highgate. The spirit of faith in which the school was founded in 1935 with 35 students, has sustained Marymount High School as it journeys into the future.

We, the Franciscan Sisters of Allegany heartily congratulate Marymount High School for moving the school throughout these 80 years, keeping your focus to build a community that is guided by Franciscan values based on the gospel, and fostering and sustaining a culture of excellence to enable your graduates to become citizens of integrity, knowing the worth of work, and being at peace with God and all of creation.

May God bless you a hundred-fold as you continue your journey beyond these 80 years. Congratulations! SISTER TERESITA M. DESOUZA, OSF Local Minister Franciscan Sisters of Allegany
