St James keep pace in Zone A

- Paul Clarke Gleaner Writer

WESTERN BUREAU: ST JAMES High School’s head coach, Theodore Whitmore, is delighted with his young team’s effort after watching them edge Green Pond 1-0 in yesterday’s Inter-Secondary Schools Sports Association (ISSA)/FLOW Zone A daCosta Cup football clash.

Forward Tyreke Clarke scored the game’s only goal in the 68th minute to keep St James in the hunt for zone honours, with maximum 12 points from four matches.

Meanwhile, in Zone K, Dinthill continued their free scoring ways, hammering four past McGrath to remain in front.

At Green Pond, Clarke’s effort was a brilliant solo run from the right flank. He then cut inside and fired low and hard. Green Pond first-year goalkeeper was unlucky as he slipped and the ball slid under his body and into the goal.

SECOND DEFEAT

Their budding rivalry never sparked as Green Pond never looked much like they were interested in the game and suffered their second defeat in four matches, to remain on four points, after winning one and drawing the other.

However, for Whitmore, St James is on a roll and they are now eyeing zone leaders (on goal difference) Cornwall College, who they next meet on Saturday.

“It’s a game-by-game situation with this team. As you can Cleyon Clarke of St James High battles Green Pond defender Andreo Allen for the ball in their ISSA/FLOW daCosta Cup football game at Green Pond High School. St James won 1-0. see these players are young, but while I think we are not playing very well, we still get the right result, and that, I believe that is a good thing,” he said.

“Four matches played, with four victories. I can’t complain. Where we may end up is not clear, but I am sure the players are delighted with the results so far. We can only get better from here,” Whitmore told The Gleaner.

None of the Zone E matches were played due to heavy rain
