WORLD-RENOWN JAMAICAN marine wildlife artist and entrepreneur Guy Harvey has received his unique Appleton Estate Jamaica Rum blend.
The special gift, crafted by Joy Spence, J. Wray & Nephew Limited’s master blender, was presented to Harvey by senior blender David Morrison on Tuesday at the cocktail reception for the Montego Bay International Marlin Tournament, presented by Appleton Estate Jamaica Rum.
“It is a huge honour to receive this from Appleton Estate. Even though I live in Cayman now, I always drink my rum,” stated Harvey upon receiving his custom blend.
Harvey was gifted his very own custom blend for his work as an artist and conservationist. Founder of the Guy Harvey Research Institute at Nova Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, as well as the Guy Harvey Ocean Foundation, Harvey will also be captaining the chairman’s boat during the tournament.
Born in Germany, Harvey was raised in Jamaica, obtaining a PhD degree in fisheries management from the University of the West Indies. His art, popular worldwide, dynamically illustrates sport fish like the marlin, and his pieces have been reproduced in many forms, such as prints, posters, T-shirts, jewellery, and clothing. In 2014, he was chosen to paint the hull art of the Norwegian Escape class of cruise ships.
PROTECTING WILDLIFE
An outspoken advocate for marine conservation, Harvey is passionate about protecting the lives he portrays in his work, establishing the Guy Harvey Ocean Foundation, an organisation that funds scientific research and educational initiatives. Other persons to have received their very own blend include Tessanne Chin, after winning a season of NBC’s ‘The Voice’, and legendary musician Barry Tuckwell.
During the business of the Montego Bay International Marlin Tournament, Harvey will be sharing his conservation knowledge in a briefing with anglers, demonstrating best tag and release practices. The 55th annual Montego Bay Marlin International Competition kicked off on September 19th and ends tomorrow. The event will close with the highly anticipated Appleton Estate Tight Lines Marlin Boat Raft-up & Beach Party at Doctor’s Cave Beach in Montego Bay.
