Credit unions prepare for annual week of activities

-

THE ISLAND’S credit unions are preparing to observe another Credit Union Week from October 16-22 this year. The theme of the upcoming observance is ‘Credit Unions: The Authentic Difference’. The theme highlights the seven cooperative principles on which are built the operations of credit unions.

The week will begin with a thanksgiving service on Sunday, October 16 at St Luke’s Church in Cross Roads, Kingston, at 7:30 a.m. This is the national church service so parish credit unions will organise church services in their communities. Credit union members, as well as staff and volunteers of credit unions are invited to attend these services.

CORPORATE SOCIAL ACTIVITY

The week of activities will continue on the Tuesday and Wednesday with Soup ’n’ Soap outreach activities across the island. Credit union, will use these two days to show care to the less fortunate in their communities. These may be residents living in homes for the aged or infirmaries or wards of the state. They are expected to receive meals and care packages.

International Credit Union (ICU) Day will be celebrated on the Thursday, October 20. This is traditionally the third Thursday in the month of October and this has been so since 1948. The day is recognised to reflect upon the credit union movement’s history and to promote its achievements. It is a day to honour those who have dedicated their lives to the movement, recognise the hard work of those working in the credit union industry and show appreciation to members.

The ultimate goal is to raise awareness about the great work that credit unions are doing around the world and give members the opportunity to get more involved.

Locally, the Jamaica Cooperative Credit Union League on behalf of credit unions will celebrate International Credit Union Day with a movie at the Carib Cinema in Cross Roads. Credit union members and potential members will be able to win tickets to attend the movie. These giveaways will begin the week prior to and during Credit Union Week.

For more information on what members’ appreciation activities your credit union will be engaged in for Credit Union Week, please see the schedule that will be published in The Gleaner on Sunday, October 16.
