JAMAICA WAS nominated to the executive board of the World Health Organization (WHO) during the 55th Directing Council Meeting of the Pan American Health Organization now underway in Washington, DC, United States.

‘This is a tremendous opportunity to strengthen partnerships as we embark on greater public health care advocacy for Jamaica and the region,” stated Minister of Health, Dr Christopher Tufton.

Jamaica, who is the Caribbean Representative for the Region of the Americas along with the Dominican Republic, will hold this position during the 2016 to 2019 period. Part of the nation’s role will include gaining consensus from Caribbean partners on matters of the world health agenda.

‘Health information systems will be one of the key areas of focus for the region as we continue to respond to emerging health threats. We will also use this opportunity to strengthen vector control management particularly in dealing with mosquito borne diseases,” stated Tufton.
